DVD-R's hold about 7MB more data and tends to be more compatible then DVD+R discs on stand alone players. DVD+R are pretty much equal in compatibility if you have a DVD burner that allows for bitsetting that makes the disc look like a DVD-ROM disc to stand alone players. DVD-R's default to the DVD-ROM designation so they require no bitsetting to be done.

I think DVD+R would be more than equal in compatibility if you can do bitsetting since it makes the DVD+R look like DVD-ROM which is what DVD players expect to play.
I've never seen any sign that DVD-R defaults to looking like DVD-ROM. When I do an analysis of the disc parameters of a DVD-R I never see it specified as a DVD-ROM. I thought the lack of bitsetting was a major negative of that format.
