Stand alone recorder question
First of all let me say I do not own a computer. I access the internet with webtv. That said, getting a dvd burner is not an option. I am thinking about getting a standalone recorder to dub vhs tapes over to dvd.
My question is this...can I then take that copy, put in my dvd layer and make subsequent copies without a lot of signal loss? I've heard two different opinions. One says that it won't work. The picture will be very blocky. The other side says the copies will be virtually identical to the original.
What is your experience?

Well you'd basically be doing the Analog to Digital conversion each time, not to mention re-encoding. I think your best bet would be to get a DVD Recorder with a built in hard drive. Dub your VHS to the HDD, and then burn the dvd's in-unit off the HDD. Some of the recorders will let you make bit-for-bit copies from the HDD to the dvd.
