Oh man, thanks for a better source. I was going to post this, but I'd rather never act like a prick on the forums then post a news piece where the only source I had was AICN

Playbill : Will you have a role in it?

MB : It's doubtful, but I'm writing myself back into the Spaceballs sequel that I'm now writing, so you haven't seen the last of my face. Why another Spaceballs? It wouldn't feel right have anyone else play Yoghurt and the first one was the best experience I've had making a movie since Blazing Saddles.

Playbill : When can we expect that?

MB : Best case scenario : a week before the new Star Wars opens. Worst Case Scenario : a year after the new star wars opens.
then again... It's still sourced to AICN, only not a direct link.

Many years ago he said that if he made a sequel it would be called Spaceballs III: The Search For Spaceballs II. I wonder if he'll stick with that to tie into Episode III.

So is Bill Pullman going to star? Where'd he go? And no John Candy...will be disapointing, too bad.

Of course the real question is whether Mel Brooks can still make a funny movie. Here's hoping.

They should make a CG version of Barf instead of replacing John Candy or not having Barf at all.

Well, as far as the original cast, wouldn't it be best to spoof the new trilogy, prequel-style?

That's what I was thinking. It would be nice if he parodied a wide variety of sci-fi films instead of mainly focusing on Star Wars this time.

This thread made my day

I loved the first one even though I never saw Star Wars (runs and hides).

Seriously. "Spaceballs" was his last funny movie, IMO. I hope this one's just as good.

Years ago on the Onion they made a joke about Jonathan Lipinski playing young Dark Helmet. Is he too old for that now?

Oh, hell yes! The original is my favorite Mel Brooks flick, and it's still funny today. One could argue that a Star Wars spoof released in 1987 was several years too late but with the new SW trilogy, the time is ripe. May the Schwartz be with ya.

As long as he takes some good jibes at the new trilogy of Star Wars, I am going to love this. I will probably love it either way, but Mel Brooks has got to have a Jar Jar character in there that everybody hates and gets killed violently in the end.

And the prequel idea is great as well.

My favorite quote: She's gone from suck to blow!

Hmmm, while I'll probably go see it - I suspect that Mel's time has passed. Aside from having not made a funny movie in about 20 years, the racy, politically incorrect slapstick humor that made Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein so good - well, you just cant make movies like that these days.

So I hold out hope, but I suspect there will be none coming.

Yeah, that's my greatest concern. Men in Tights, while funny also made one of Mel Brooks most annoying problems...repeat jokes. "Walk this way" just ain't that funny anymore. And Dracula was...not funny at all really.

But hey...maybe his success with The producers means he still got the creative juices. He'll definaetly have a lot more attention on him after that (and the upcoming big budget film of that) so Spaceballs definately has a chance of being given a lot more attention.
