You can also use a null modem cable to hook it to a PC.

Would it be a DirecTiVo? If so, you don't need a phone line at all, except for the initial setup (which you can do at someone else's house if you want). You can just ignore the occasional nag messages.

You can get add on devices that will let your TiVo use the internet to get guide info. I've been using one for 2 years. An ethernet card that actually goes inside the TiVo. Of course, this voids any warranty.

The Series 2 Tivos have an ethernet built in with a USB port -- I'm only familiar with stand alone units (those that work with cable). You have to do the initial setup with a phone line; after that, an internet connection will do. Take the unit to work and use a phone line there or a friends house ala Jeremy's suggestion. Of course, you'll need a TV too....

Your TV watching life WILL change for the better!

I've got my TiVo hooked up to a wireless USB card. Connects to my wireless network just fine.

You need the phone for the initial set-up and that's it.

Edit: It's a Linksys Wireless USB Network Adapter. Model WUSB11.

Yes, many USB ethernet adapters (wireless or not) work with TIVO series 2. Check tivo.com for a list of supported ones. I've been using a Linksys wireless B one for a while now. But if you don't have a phoneline at all, you'll still need to go to a friend's house to do the initial configuration (don't worry, they don't have to have the same cable provider as you, that's something that you input in yourself).

This is, of course, for standalone Tivo's, not DirectTivos.

Can you do this with a Series 2 DirecTivo? I've got a USB port on it. I used to connect via phone, but I've got rid of my phone line. If I can't is there any other options? I don't care about voiding the warranty as I've already upgraded the drive in it.

Yes, but only certain models are supported. Check out this list for details.

BTW, supposedly expanding the drive in a Series 2 TiVo doesn't void the warranty. There is no "Breaking this seal will void your warranty" sticker like there was on Series 1 TiVos.

on a side note... I wish DirectTV would come out with the home media option, so I don't NEED to use my phone line.

...sorry to digress.

Thanks for the link. Just to verify, they make no distinction between a standalone and a DirectTV unit as far as Series 2 goes. So these will also work on DirecTivo? I thought I read somewhere that the DirecTivos were different when it comes to networking. BTW I have an RCA DVR40 receiver.

I also do this. I think I am at 200 days now without a phone line hooked up and it still works

If I'm not mistaken, I believe the USB ports on the Series 2 DTiVo units aren't enabled...

You're probably right, since without the media option, they serve absolutely no purpose...

Ethernet with ReplayTV

ReplayTVs come with built-in Ethernet that can receive programming info. No phone line needed. Maybe a solution if just recording over-the-air.
