The Haunting 1963 audio question

I have heard mixed opinions regarding the audio on the dvd. Some state it is far to low and hollow sounding, lacking atmosphere and the scares of the original theatrical mix, which was said to be pretty loud.

Meanwhile others say it does not sound that bad and is actually pretty good and gets the job done.

So which is it? a bad low recorded mix,or the original mix..and some people may have just had their setups not set right?

Also how is the audio on the 1993 letterbox laserdisc? Is it better than the dvd? If so,I may pick that up instead...as you know how I want the best audio possible for a film.

I thought the audio on the original version of The Haunting DVD was competent. I also believe it's actually mono, so a lot of people may not have their center speaker set up to perform correctly for a mono track.

It is mono of course, which is great by me

I was wondering if peoples systems were set up properly also? Since alot of the mono Warner released, both new & old get bad reviews for 'too low' sounding audio.

So I was just wondering. Someone on mhfv.net in a thread on the bad Blow Up audio mentions the release of The Thing also has 'terrible' audio quality that moves between two loud or too low.

I have The Thing and had no problems at all with the audio. It all seemed quite level and not uneven.

So even if The Haunting does have good audio quality. I just wanted to make sure I was not in for another botch job audiowise like with Images Twitch of the Death Nerve(terrible quality!). I know Warner pretty much delivers the best possible audio and video. But all the complaints over uneven audio levels and such have made me abit cautious. Then again, they may just have their systems not set up properly.

+ if the dvd sounds as good as last years TCM showing I saw. Then I have no problems with the audio. Meanwhile TCM's showing of Blow Up sounded terrible, where it was so inaudible, then too loud, then too low at any given moment, much like the terrible audio on Twitch of the Death Nerve.

The audio mix IS low... And yes, my system is set-up properly. That said, it's a clean mono track if nothing else... You just need to turn it up some.
