Silent Hill 4: Thoughts?

My wife picked up SH4 yesterday and played it for a little while. I'm pretty she likes it so far. She was already jumpy from the beginning. We have the Xbox version going 5.1 on a 46" widescreen. Pretty cool gaming experience.

With that setup even Superman64 would be a cool gaming experience.

No wait, nevermind...

Silent Hill 4 is a great game and I was really looking forward to playing it. Once I did, I couldn't help to think that it was just another Silent Hill game aside from the clunky 1st person mode. I still like it, but they really need to evolve more.

I'm with you on this one WepaMan. I missed out on SH3 since I have no PS2. So, maybe my expectations were too high. The 1st person stuff was just not great to control. The more you play, the more you realize it's just a lot more of the same without really evolving as a series. Still, there are some creepy moments, but the story didn't really kick in until I was about 4 hours in, and even then it was pretty weak.

If you are on the fence, rent or wait til after Thanksgiving when it will probably be down to $20.

That seems to be the main complaint for this game, also mentioned in numerous reviews, they don't really do anything new with the series unlike what Capcom is doing with their completely revamped Resident Evil 4.

Still I'm excited about Silent Hill 4, I've got my hands full right now but I can't wait to play it, I love this series. SH3 had some really messed up stuff in it.

I played the demo on the OXM disc and wasn't impressed. The battle system wasn't as responsive as it should be, which was a gripe I had with the first game.

My wife likes it for the story and creepyness. The controls and gameplay are secondary to her.

It does seem like more of the same from what I've seen though.

They started developing it while they were still working on Silent Hill 3, so it's not surprising that it's fairly similar.

That being said, I really enjoyed Silent Hill 3 (never had a playstation, so it being released on PC was my first opportunity to play the series), and I'll probably be picking SH4 up on Xbox or PC as well

I haven't gotten it yet, but I plan to. I played the extensive demo on the OXM disc and what I played was pretty awesome. I played through SH3 twice and loved it, but found it a bit too short. This one seems like there's alot more meat to it.

Did everyone get the soundtrack with their game? I'm really digging the vocal tracks in the SH games. "Waiting for You," "Your Rain," and "Tender Sugar" are great songs. The Rage Remix of "Your Rain" was a nice addition too. Reminds me of 90's synth pop like Ace of Base.

I'm playing the PC version right now, and the graphics are TERRIBLE. What happened?!??! Silent Hill 3 PC had fantastic textures that made everything look disturbingly real. But the team who did SH4PC seemed ike they didn't try, and just used the PS2 textures. So everything looks blurred and muddy...booo!

On the other hand, the game so far is quite good - enjoying the small little things to do in the room, while actually having undestroyable enemies, which does heighten tensions. Just really too bad about the graphics!
