Mira Nair offered directing job for Harry Potter: Order of the Phoenix

Saw this at Comingsoon.net

The Times of India spoke to Monsoon Wedding and Vanity Fair director Mira Nair, who says she's been offered the director's chair for Warner Bros.' Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

"I'm getting offers to direct 'Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. I read it over the weekend. I'm still deciding," she said, "I'm not letting all this go to my head. I'm grounded. I practice detachment, it helps me keep my balance. I'm a Dilliwalli, only an asana gets me on my head! My son Zoharan's excited. I've seen all the Harry Potter movies with him."

The studio is currently filming Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, directed by Mike Newell for a November 18, 2005 release. "Phoenix" is targeted for a June, 2007 release.

----

I wonder if the series as a whole will ever have any continuity after the first two films ... especially considering the differences (for better or worse) from 1,2 to 3.

Outstanding director ..... check out Salaam Bombay. Powerful movie, and the DVD has a fascinating commentary track.

Well, I haven't heard of this director before, but then a lot of people hadn't heard of Alfonso Cuaron before he directed Prisoner of Azkaban.

As for any sort of continuity within the series, I think the change in atmosphere was absolutely necessary for Prisoner of Azkaban; the series gets continually darker and the stories get longer, so such a change needed to happen at some point, and better there than in the next movie. Supposedly Mike Newell is taking his cue style-wise from Cuaron, but we won't know that for sure until we see his movie. If those two are similar in feel, I'd hope and imagine that Nair (or whoever gets hired for OotP) will not mess up the continuity.

While I'm glad they are giving smaller directors a chance, I can't exactly say I'm excited about this.

Interesting choice. She can definitely handle the drama but I'm not sure how she'll handle the action scenes

Can we at least have them wear their uniforms throughout the school year this time?

There are two more books coming up, but I want the Jaws/Raiders of the Lost Ark Spielberg and not the sappy E.T. Spielberg.

The next books should be pretty dark and people will die.

I don't think I'd really want Spielberg to direct ... it would then become a Spieldberg movie as opposed to a Harry Potter movie.

Spielberg was up for the first one, but apparently didn't get along with J.K. Rowling. Rumors were that he wanted to shift the series to being set outside of New York, instead of London, and bring in Haley Joel Osment as Harry. I don't think Spielberg would have taken the series away from England. I couldn't imagine him using Osment either since he's not proven to have played a British character at any point, so he'd have to have played a minor character at best.

Mira Nair offered directing job for Harry Potter: Order of the Phoenix

Does this mean there's gonna be some Bollywood song and dance numbers in the movie? And how is Hermione gonna look dressed in a sari?

I'm guessing quite good by then. Can't wait to see the scene where she and Ron attempt all 64 positions of the Kama Sutra.
