For those of you in the L.A. area, Vincent Gallo will be at The Nuart Theatre in West L.A. for Q & A sessions September 3rd & 4th for the 7:30 & 10:00 pm showings. The movie is playing now at The Nuart.

Interestingly enough, the heavily edited release print (26 minutes deleted from the original Cannes screening) actually got a from Ebert. Hopefully he'll discuss what motivated the editing, and whether he really thinks his original cut is better that what's being shown now.

I have to wonder how the film went from being one of the worst movies Ebert had ever seen, to getting a thumbs-up by him by removing twenty-six minutes.
I would think if the movie was as bad as he said it was at Cannes, that it would be unsalvagable. When it makes it to DVD, can we hope for an Ebert commentary? That would be quite interesting to hear.

Okay probably not, but you know how that goes.
And that said - you'd be amazed at how much 26 minutes can change something. Who knows, he might end up giving 2046 a thumbs up once thats all said and done.

Another example would be Brazil - with 48 minutes cut and scenes re-arranged, a great movie suddenly became an unwatchable and laughable mess.
If you pay attention to a lot of the directors' commentary tracks on various movies, you will often hear them discussing how cutting a scene here and a few second there made drastic improvements in their final cut of the movie.

The entire review is basically about editing being the "soul" of a film.

Interested to see how this pans out... I was at a screening of The Brown Bunny at the Nuart this past friday night and a fair portion of the audience were laughing uncontrollably... At one point in the movie where the volume is very low a woman behind me sighed and said "Vincent, you suck..." and as everyone left the theatre I heard another guy say "That was worse than a porno."

Well, I saw this yesterday. It wasn't as bad or as boring as most have said in reviews. There was a decent little twist as well.
