The Hollywood Reporter indicates that "The Munsters" are headed to the big screen, thanks mostly to the Wayans brothers.

Keenen Ivory, Marlon and Shawn Wayans have all struck a deal with Universal Pictures to take the classic 1960's television show about a family of friendly monsters who never quite get why people react in terror to them and give it a modern makeover that "will stay true to the original characters, but will place them in a contemporary setting".

The deal means the three Wayanses will write the screenplay as well as produce along with Rick Alvarez through Wayans Bros. Prods. There is a possibility that Keenen Ivory Wayans would direct, though no deal is in the works without a finished script.

If they change the title to the 'Muensters' and make the characters out of cheese and make it a stop motion animation I will see it.

I don't see how it's a bad idea. I don't like the fact that the Wayanses are behind it - if [B]Scary Movie 2[/B was the best they could do with the subject matter, I worry.

Also, just because the Wayanses write the script, does not mean they'll eventually have anything to do with the finished product...

The show was hideously remade in the 80s. As crappy as the original was, the remake was ten levels below that.

I just saw this report over at dark horizons (shudder). Personally I don't think it's a good idea (especially since it's been tried before, with lackluster results), but who knows? A miracle may occur and it may turn out ok. The fact that these are the geniuses behind "White Chicks" doesn't fill me with much hope though.

The real question is, "Could there be a worse idea than a Munsters remake?"

The original was cool because of the strengths of the original cast, especially the interaction between Fred Gwynn and Al Lewis. As a concept, the Munsters is nothing great.

Are they gonna urbanize it? (Da Munstaz?) Or fill it with weed and genitalia jokes, a la Scary Movie?

Actually, I don't necesarily think either would make the movie any worse. A contemporary Munster movie is probably gonna suck no matter who does it. It was a cute enough show, but let's face it, between the original series, the 80s revival series, the various tv movies, and the Charlize Theron/Christina Ricci movie last year, the franchise is pretty used up.

At least have some running zombies in it and Ben Stiller as that creepy kid.

It won't be The Munsters without Al Lewis, and I think he's too old to fart, let alone act in a movie.

The Addams Family worked well on the big screen, but that show was infinitely better than The Munsters. I mean, I like The Munsters, but there's no way in Hell I'll watch a Munsters movie. The 80s version was awful enough.

How about Jerry Bruckheimer and Michael Bay's The Munsters, in which the family is reimagined as an elite squad of covert operatives who deal with the threats to huamnity that the police and FBI can't -- or won't -- deal with. It's like Van Helsing meets Mission Impossible. Starring Sylvester Stallone as Herman Munster and Famke Jansen as Lily Munster.

Or how about Ismail Merchant and James Ivory's The Munsters, in which the title characters are not literal monsters -- rather they are humans plagued by the guilt, anguish, and avarice that plague all of us. Starring Anthony Hopkins as Grandpa Munster, a man tortured by his own knowledge of the deaths he witnessed as a young man in Viet Nam.

Actually though, in that Ron Jeremy documentary out a year or two ago there was an interview with Al Lewis. He looked like he still had a bit of pep in his step.

Well, the Honeymooners with an all African American cast?

Al rocks. I saw him in that documentary. Figures he'd be best buds with a porn star like Ron. The man has always given me the impression that he's a letch who misses the days when you could slap your secretary on the ass and call her "toots".

Actually, I seem to recall hearing that Al lost one, if not both of his feet to advanced Diabetes. I can't imagine he has too much of a pep in his step nowadays, or too much of a step in his step, for that matter...

Pretty interesting article. That's too bad.

They've already done enough bad MUNSTERS remakes.... (THE MUNSTERS TODAY series and the HERE COME THE MUNSTERS and MUNSTERS SCARY LITTLE CHRISTMAS Fox TV movies) and something along the lines of the awful SCARY MOVIE series sounds even worse.

Can't be any worse than another Batman and Superman...like we need those as well....both those franchises died after the second films.
