Philips DVP624 vs. Toshiba 4900 (or any other)?

I am looking to buy a new DVD player with region free, (anamorphic) PAL to NTSC capability.
My old Sampo 611 is dying and has its problems anyway (playing anamorphic PAL discs and it doesn't even work with my Pioneer D710S receiver).

I am looking at the Philips DVP624 because of the various media files it supports. I would love to be able to watch .avi and .mpeg CD-R files on my Television via the player.

I have a few questions:
- Does the Philips have DTS? I have read conflicting sources about this.
- Does it play DVD-R discs? I've heard conflicting things about this as well.
-Can the Macrovision be disabled when run through a VCR?
-How is the overall quality of the player, compared to similar players in the same price range (Toshiba 4900, Zenith DVB318 Panasonic XP30 - is this region free?, JVC whatever the model is).

thanks for any info you can provide.

-edit- I have read most of the threads about these machines - but I have found some conflicting information (see above). I was just hoping to have anyone who has this Philips player to tell me what they think.....

Check http://www.videohelp.com under the DVDPlayers section (link on the left). There's usually plenty of peer reviews on DVD players. I'm sure you'll get some answers there.
