Criterion Tanner '88

Taken from a link at the criterion forum.

Tanner '88 Cover Art

I've never seen it but figured someone would be interested.

Edited to correct the link

Cool... Criterion did the LD of this too.

I was wondering if HBO or Criterion would get this out on DVD this year. Seems like a perfect time to do so...

Wow, Criterion takes on TV. Are there any other series people would consider Criterion worthy?

I remember seeing bits of this when it came out (I was only 9), I'll be interested to check this out.

Any word on # of discs? I ask because I don't know of any Criterion sets which are more than three discs for one single movie/project [Brazil, Scenes From a Marriage, and, I believe, the upcoming Battle of Algiers disc], but I'd think that 'Tanner' would be three [6 hours / 12 half-hour eps (really 10 half-hours and one hour)] just for the episodes. Some places may cut that down to two, but that doesn't seem like Criterion's style. And there's *got* to be an extras disc (maybe not, actually, since the only thing I know of that they could put on would be the intros they filmed for Sundance channel ... but I want to see a doc about making it! There must be deleted stuff, right?).

I'll buy it either way, as I have every other Altman DVD (including the Canadian 'Caine Mutiny Court-Martial' and the Brazilian 'Kansas City'), but this could be a *really* cool disc if any stuff has survived from 1988 to be included.

Let's hope Criterion's got 'Secret Honor' right behind it. Or, for that matter, they did an LD of 'Short Cuts', right?

Well, it was on 3 vhs tapes (2 hours a piece), so I'm sure 2 dvds will be more than enough for the whole thing including a couple hours of extras.

This isn't even showing up on their website yet so I don't have any more information. Someone just found the cover art by playing around with file names.

New Line owns Short Cuts, and it seems they're content to just let it rot in the vaults.

Word on the street is that the DVD rights for Short Cuts have been transferred from New Line to Image Entertainment, and that the latter is at work on a special edition which could see a release before the end of the year or, more likely, 2005.

While they're at it, I would very much enjoy Thieves Like Us on DVD in any form. Anyone know who holds the rights to it?

It doesn't seem that the art department tried very hard on the cover. Cool to see this released, though. I've heard/read about it but never seen it.

Cheers.

I love it, personally.

It's an election year right now. Look at some of the campaign signs the real candidates put up.

I'm happy about this news. I was too young when it first came out and didn't see it. But I am a big Altman fan and really want to see it. I was hoping they would release this since Sundance was doing an updated version of the series.

Also, about the Criterion thing, I never had a laser disc player, but didn't Criterion release a lot of TV on LD. For some reason, I want to say they released some classic shows like "I Love Lucy."

I could very well be wrong, but thought someone else might know for sure.

Not exactly. At the time, Criterion was owned by the Voyager Group, who put out their own LDs for I Love Lucy and some other classic TV series. Tanner '88 was the only title released under the "Criterion Television" banner. Later, Criterion broke off from Voyager around the time of the switch to DVD.

Actually, there was a Criterion I Love Lucy laserdisc. I will have to check at home for more details, but it had some of the best episodes (Vita-mita-vegimin, etc.) and special features. In 1998, when Criterion was just putting out their first DVDs, I printed up the individual web pages for all of their laserdiscs, and there was this compilation disc.

I'm no expert, but a little bit of internet research seems to confirm what you're saying.

"I LOVE LUCY - (CAV) - [COMEDY]
Fullscreen, 1951, NR, 90min, Criterion CTC100L, $50"

IMDb says:
"Episodes: "The Candy Factory", "Vitameatavegamin". Side 1 is CAV. It has the original opening and closing credits and even original commercials. Also included are 25 hilarious clips from episodes and many more bonuses." and also "The analog tracks contain talks about Lucille Ball, her life and career before the series, the creation of "I Love Lucy, and interviews with Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, and many of the other creative people involved with the series."

Well, it looks like some of you were able to confirm what I was thinking about TV shows on Criterion LDs. Thanks for that information.

It would certainly be nice if Criterion would release more TV shows on DVD. I'm usually pleased with their packages and am looking forward to seeing how this one turned out.

Criterion released two episodes of the original "The Addams Family" on laserdisc; I cannot recall the spine number.

That was under the Voyager label, not Criterion.

I stand corrected on I Love Lucy, though. Those also had the Criterion Television label.

You stand corrected a second time. Here's a the cover of the Criterion Television LD of "The Addams Family" from a recent eBay auction:

Thanks for going the extra mile for me. I had been looking for the site that hosts the old Criterion Collection laserdisc site(a copy of it anyways), but couldn't find it. I knew it was a Criterion Collection release, and know the Criterion/Voyager differences.
