Many good sci-fi movies (not "space westerns") are thought-provoking, including:
SOLARIS
2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY
BLADE RUNNER
MINORITY REPORT
A.I.
Some recent Asian films that also fall into this category:
A TALE OF TWO SISTERS
THE EYE

Another vote for Terrence Malick, true only a few films made by him in well over 30 years but all very thought provoking. Lots of Metaphor,Symbolism, Allegory, etc.

I was gonna say Shyamalan's movies are thought provoking? And yes, watch Do The Right Thing. Possibly the best movie of the 80s.

I own Do the Right Thing. Its not any more of a "thinking" movie than any other above average drama.
