"Hulk Hogan" might join "WWF." More name woes for WWE.

From the current WON:

"WWE filed a lawsuit against Marvel Comics over the name Hulk Hogan, Hulkamania and Hulkster. In the early 80s, when Hogan started taking off from a merchandising standpoint, and Marvel owned the name Incredible Hulk, both sides signed a 20-year usage contract. Marvel claims the contract was signed July 9, 1984, which means it has just expired and wants more money for a new deal. WWE would blow it off, except Hogan is such a big part of the company's plans to market its video library. WWE claims the contract was signed in March of 1985, which means it has a few more months left. If WWE and Marvel don't strike a new deal, WWE would have to re-edit all Hogan tapes to take those phrases out of the visuals and commentary."

Just a heads up for Class316. I hope they strike a deal because I'm not a fan of the blurring and muting.

NOoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Imagine how horrible it would be!!

Besides, Hulk Hogan will no doubt be in the new Classic Superstar series of action figures!! They MUST sign a deal!!

Also, he's supposed to be inducted in the Hall of Fame!

I don't see how they could possibly, properly edit any footage if they don't get a new deal figured out. That would be ten times worse than the editting they do now. They'd have to edit huge amounts of commentary I'd imagine.

Marvel still wants to own the Hulk copyright after the movie?

Didn’t they date the contract along with adding a signature? If not, then that contract can be valid forever.

I never understood why they had to pay Marvel in first place. The word 'hulk' existed long before Marvel used it. If they painted Hogan green and his catchphrase was "Hogan smash!" I might see it, but otherwise the similarities are marginal (unlike the more obvious Gangrel case).

On a related note, did WCW have to pay Marvel as well? In the 90s I mean, when he was working there and it was part of Turner/Time Warner.

the early days of Hulkamania were a little different, he was originally "The Incredible" Hulk Hogan for the first couple of years........adding that he rips his shirts off is another "Hulk" like trait.

This is a lawsuit that I think Vinceco could win. As said, the word "Hulk" was not invented by Marvel and clearly Hogan is at least as recognizable by that name as the comic character. I also think there is no confusion.

They'd even have to blur his t-shirt and any fans at ringside with Hulkamania shirts or signs. Aghhhhhhhhhhh.

I don't know how WCW handled the situation, but I remember they eventually refered to him as "Hollywood" Hogan.

I was always under the impression that Hogan had ownership over the name Hulk Hogan, since he used it while in WCW.

Momentary confusion...

I thought the thread title meant that the talented Mr. Hogan was thinking about being a spokesman for the World Wildlife Fund...

He's 51. A few years younger than Flair.

In a related note: Marvel sues the LOTR director Peter Jackson because he and Spiderman's alter-ego share the same first name. Marvel doesn't want people confused and wonder why Spiderman is making a King Kong movie......

Blah! you Hogan haters can go eat my bum.

Hogan is the greatest star in the history of Wrestling and he brought wrestling back from the dead not only once, in the 80's with the WWF but twice in the late 90's with the nWo. From the looks of things on Raw and Smackdown, it looks like we need him again.

Is Hogan the best technical wrestler ever? of course not, but unlike half the WWE rooster now, he's a real superstar, anytime he's on the screen it's exciting. I'd rather watch Hogan limp around the ring at 51yo anyday over the personality-void mind numbing boredom of guys like Edge, Randy Orton and Chris Benoit.

Hogan should just drop the whole hulkster thing and go back to being "Mr. America" or whatever his name was.
