By ROBERT JABLON, Associated Press Writer

LOS ANGELES - Academy Award-winning composer Jerry Goldsmith, who created the memorable music for scores of classic movies and television shows from the "Star Trek" and "Planet of the Apes" series to "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." and "Perry Mason," has died, his personal assistant said. He was 75.

He's worked on many great movies such as Alien, Rudy, and Patton.

That's sad to hear. Goldsmith was a true talent and I will miss hearing his music in movies.

I listen to RUDY at least once a week. I always loved a split-second moment on the recording where you could hear him singing along with the music.

He was one of the best.

We lost one of the greatest. He had been battling cancer for quite some time and for awhile, it seemed like he had it beat. Always the workaholic, he still had various projects lined up even while he was ill.

He probably had several good years left in him had it not been for health issues. He has left behind a great body of work for future generations to enjoy and appreciate.

Holy shit this is sad news. Alien is one of my favorite scores of all-time, also love the score for Rudy. He will be missed.

Wow. I just mentioned him in another thread probably not more than two days ago. He did the score for the director's cut of Ridley Scott's Legend with Tom Cruise.

which IMO is one of his best underrated scores he had written. (and not to be too anal about it but the score was the original score for the film in the first place. The Tangerine Dream score was produced by Universal for the American cut of the film exclusively).

A real shame. I was just watching Poltergeist II last night - a very silly movie given some weight and style by Goldsmith's score.

RIP. One of the best composers next to Bernard Herrmann.

Truly the master, the film music world was influenced by him probably more than any composer in the past 50 years. I will miss not being able to hear any new output, but his large library will keep me listening for years and years.

My favorite movie scores are Goldsmith scores. He's immortal for the Next Generation and movie Star Trek themes alone.

My faves of his:
Star Trek V
The Final Conflict (Omen III)

Planet of the Apes

Mr. Goldsmith has composed many of my favorite scores (I am a collector of film music on CD/LP) so this is incredibly sad news for me. I will miss his genius.

This is very sad. He gave us so much, and he will be missed. His brilliant scores, however, will long endure.

Sad news indeed! I love having movie soundtracks playing while I read, and lately I've been wearing grooves in my "Star Trek: First Contact" CD. Goldsmith was a very talented person!

yeah, Goldsmith's score in that was probably the one beacon of light in a movie that was otherwise the filmic equivalent of cow manure from a cow that ate grass which grew too close to friggin' Chernobyl. I'm having migraine-inducing flashbacks of the God of Shaka-Ri.

One of my favorite soundtracks. This puts a bit of a damper on my day

Ah, man. I was just watching Star Trek: The Motion Picture last night and wishing that it had a Isolated Musical Score option so I could just put it on and drift off to sleep while listening to it. Just listening to soothing Overture was almost enough. That's really sad to wake up this morning and find out that he's gone.

NPR put up an audio obituary, along with excerpts from a tribute they a few years ago.
