Explosions in the Sky
How are they live? They will be in Baltimore on October 4th. I'm thinking about checking them out. The only problem is the Ravens will be on Monday Night Football that night. Being a huge Ravens fan, I don't like the idea of missing the game. Anyway if they are a great live band I would definately lean towards going to the show.

I only found out about the Baltimore show because I'm on a mailing list of one of the local clubs.
Here's the webpage. I assume since they are in Baltimore in October, they will be touring on the east coast than also.

They're playing Chicago on the 15th of October, so they must be doing at least a decent sized tour if they're gonna be covering that much ground in a week and a half's time.
I saw them late last year when the new album came out. They're pretty good live. Not quite as insanely loud as Mogwai are live, but not many bands can match that.

Great band. Highly recommend the two available albums (hopefully their first one will get re-released). Saw them live last December, thought it was awesome. Great, though provoking, creative music.

new york show is coming up, pretty excited...anyone see this on pitchfork? they are scoring the new Billy Bob football film. dunno how i feel about it, i suppose it could be cool. post rock is becoming the new hollywood soundtrack...heard mogwai "2 rights make 1 wrong" on LAX on tv...bleh.

Texas quartet Explosions in the Sky have realized every underground musician's ultimate fantasy: Providing the score to a Billy Bob Thornton film. Evidently combining the emotional thrust of Remember the Titans with the god-only-knows-what of Bad Santa, Friday Night Lights (out October 5th via Universal Studios) stars BBT as an inspirational high school football coach in a roughneck Texas town. If you've caught the trailer, you might've recognized the backing tune "Have You Passed Through This Night?" from EITS' 2001 debut, Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Die, Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Live Forever.
Well, turns out the band's scoring the whole goddamn movie-- although it should be noted that "This Night" isn't actually used in the film. "The whole process has been as complex and at times overwhelming as we thought it might be," guitarist Mark Smith told Pitchfork via email. "It was also pretty fun, and to be honest we're a bit amazed that a big studio like Universal has allowed us to do what we did."
What they did was combine small snippets of old tunes (from Those Who Tell the Truth and 2003's The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place) with entirely new material. Smith said soundtrack producer Brian Reitzell (The Virgin Suicides, Lost in Translation) allowed the band to play "basically whatever we wanted. He would show us some scenes from the movie and we would try and match a mood. We came up with lots and lots of two-to-three-minute pieces that we liked very well, and then the music editors would try to place what we played into the scenes they had." Before the band even started scoring the film, however, the editors had used older Explosions tracks as place-holders for the movie's rough cut, and the film's director, Peter Berg, had become attached to some of those. "So they wound up wanting to license a number of our old songs for use in the movie, in addition to the original stuff we wrote," Smith explained.
The flick, set in 1988, also features era-appropriate pop fare-- Public Enemy, Bad Company, the mighty Poison-- in addition to soundtrack work from David Torn and Daniel Lanois. But the bulk of Friday Night's musical weight belongs to Explosions in the Sky. Not that Poison isn't completely tits. "The main difference from our other stuff is that there are a few songs with strings done by [Beck's father] David Campbell," Smith says. "There is an unfortunate lack of drums on our soundtrack songs-- it's mostly guitars. There's a very atmospheric song and an uplifting waltz and a song that sounds like the site of a dusty, smoking train wreck in the middle of a West Texas oilfield at dusk. It's kind of scary-sounding."
So after all that, the end result is an almost new, almost Explosions in the Sky album. Which is still pretty damn cool. The Friday Night Lights soundtrack is due out October 15th on the Universal tentacle Hip-O Records; the tracklisting is tracklisted below. Everything courtesy of EITS unless otherwise noted:

What is with directors wanting their football movies scored by post-rock bands? (Oliver Stone asked GY!BE for permission to use a clip of "Moya" for a slow-mo shot of a football sailing through the air.)

I saw Explosions in the Sky last night at northsix...and damn I was very impressed. These guys put their heart and all into their set and are leaking tons of sweat at the end of the set. When they thrash out they just move totally in synch and feed off each other and sometimes just fall to the ground, but still remain very tight even though being very animated. At one point one of the guitarist was on his knees banging a tamborine with full force on a stick the stage. During the climaxes it gets to be this wall of guitar sound, very cool. The bassist sometimes switches it up so their are 3 guitarists...first breath after coma was so great.

The band is re-releasing their first album on October 11th. They also have a new EP called "The Rescue" coming out in September. It's only available at Temporary Residence and will be part of their Travels in Constants series. I'm not too happy how they are releasing it, but I took the plunge anyway.
