Buying a new Xbox

Well, I think my current xbox has had it. I can only play a game about 10 minutes before it freezes up and says the disk is dirty or damaged. I've only had it for a little over a year, but it's go the thomson drive in it.
What's my best price on getting a new xbox? how do I know before opening it what drive it has in it, I'd like a samsung, and is the only way to save all of your files by using a memory card?
Thanks

I'd call Microsoft and bitch and moan a little and see what they offer to do before giving up and buying a new one. You might get lucky and get a free repair even though you are past the warranty date.

have you tried cleaning it? i've read posts about how some people have had good luck w/ that - i think they had to open it up (which i'd do assuming you're out of warranty).

also, i'm still a little skeptical about the Thompson drive thing... however, if you do a search, you will find pics of the 3 drives as well as serial numbers describing which ones are which somewhere.

you can't save all the files using the memory card - like SW KotOR.

Here's a link to try to help determine what disc drive it may have without opening the box.

http://www.xbox-linux.org/docs/versionsfinding.html

I've been trying to interpret it but it's a little confusing. It seems that if it is a 1.0 version then it is a Thomson drive. Beyond this, there's no way to tell. And since the systems are being manufactured in China now, these don't have the 1.0 version.

I think it's worth the 100 bucks to have the drive replaced by MS.

If you have the drive replaced can they transfer all of your saved files to the new hard drive?

You're not getting a new hard drive just a new media drive so transferring saves would be moot.

well, i've read about people who thought they were only getting the cd replaced but ended up getting a new hard drive or a new xbox altogether.

If you missed out on coupon, just search around ebay they got for $130 after ship new often. You can get a used one for $95-120 depending on luck and timing but you never know what your gonna get.

Is it best buy or circuit city where they have a warranty where you can take your xbox back no questions asked within 2 years? And how much does it cost?

It's both it's around $30 bucks I think. Also it's nice I payed $300 for my xbox and returned it for a new one and they gave me a new system plus $130 back. I did not see that money coming I was like WTF 0_0 So I got Windows XP upgrade from them with the money. I wonder how many folks retured their $300 system to get free money. I returned mine cause I wanted a samsung drive I had no idea they would gave me money back.

Yeah, check out that guy's feedback. Here's what one person who won the auction you linked to had to say. "auction was fraudulent. seller refusing to refund money immediately." No wonder they were so cheap.

Yeah, nothing funnier than a fellow forum member and gamer getting ripped off.

I hate my xbox. Sometimes I can play for hours and it works fine, other times it'll give me the dirty disc error. I just hate that you can't do anything once u get the error message. Like eject the disc and put it back it and let it try to read again. But no, it just stops there and it's over. I'm upset because I was playing NFL 2k5 against the computer for some crib points. I had one of the most amazing games ever. A 80 punt return. 15/15 completions, 3 interception TDs, a 55 yd field goal. And then in the 4th quarter disc error. I just wish I could resume the game so I can record those stats.

My Xbox did this very rarely until I got SW: KOTOR.
I noticed the harddrive began clicking and searching A LOT more after this (not saying it is due to the game but is suspicious).
When my Xbox's harddrive searches during any of my games the screen freezes for about 2-3 seconds. This interruption is enough to screw-up your game where timing or sequencing is critical to playing (racing, fighting, first-person shooter, etc.). The dreaded "Dirty/damaged disc" is something that is far too common with my gaming experience lately.

My Xbox is the first generation so I'm assuming it's the Thomson drive (???) which I paid 3 bills for.

If MS decides to drop the price on the Xbox again for this Holiday season I will definitely pick up another and use the current one as an MP3 whorehouse.
