Comcast: Do I need separate boxes for HD and DVR?

I would imagine I'd need separate boxes as I don't believe Comcast has an HD-DVR yet, but anynoe who use it know?

No Comcast DVR yet (Detroit area, and probably everywhere). Just the HD box. http://broadband.motorola.com/consum...00/default.asp

I just got a DVR from Comcast, which also happens to be an HD cable box too. I don't have an HD set yet, but I can watch any of the HD channels on my SD set. And the DVR will record the HD channels also. Another bonus I found-it even records the 5.1 audio on any channels that have it, like HBO or Encore!

Worth the $9.95 a month extra.

Wow! What area do you live cwellock? I'd love it if that were available near me. Thanks for the info.

That's good to know. Do you have the SA8000 DVR box? That is the one I have. When I eventually upgrade to HDTV, that would be nice to already have.

I just got a Comcast DVR. It was supposed to be non-HD but since the box they had was HD and it'd take 24 hours to set up a non-HD they gave us the HD box. It's a Motorola DCT6208. It's the same $9.95 so I'm pretty happy.

The Motorola 6408 and 6412 have dual tuners. 08 is an 80GB, 12 is a 120GB. The 08 is in the test markets, the 12 isn't available yet.

Yeah, I got the 6208 too. I was told by someone I know who works for Comcast that the dual tuner boxes should be available later this year. I'm not really finding the single tuner box to be much of a problem, though. I can watch something already recorded, and still record something else at the same time.

I also like the guide much better than my previous digital box-I used to be able to get maybe 3 days of program information, now I'm getting over 2 weeks worth! I've found all kinds of stuff I never knew was on. My wife is complaining that whenever she tries to watch something during the day, she can't because I'm recording something. Maybe I need that dual-tuner box after all...

It turns out the OnDemand didn't work on the box they gave us. After someone came out we were told the box shouldn't even work on our tv since we don't have an HD set. It must be a fluke. We were also told the digital channels shouldn't be working with the splitter since the one i had was 600 and digital is 700 and above...

So we got a new box, and it looks the name and is the DCT6208. Here's the strange part. We have HBO,SHO and STARZ, but HD channels only worked for HBO, SHO, ESPN and ABC. Now HBO, SHO, STARZ and ESPN work in HD but ABC doesn't.

I'm not sure how accurate my using HD is, the picture is much clearer on the Hi-Def channels on my non-HD tv.

If getting the HD channels is a fluke, I have it too. I can watch any of the HD channels on my SD set. One thing that's kind of a PITA- when I'm watching an HD channel, I have a hard time switching to another channel. And it won't go to the guide or main menu either. I try a bunch of different things, and finally something works. But one time I was recording a HD channel, and wanted to stop and watch something else, and NOTHING I did worked. I had to watch that channel until the recording stopped. Have you seen that too?

Has anyone gotten the SA8000 firmware update that gives you the option to record to VCR? I've been waiting for it for 2 weeks now
