I really dont' feel like shelling out $30 for a remote. I'd only even use it when I didn't feel like using my DVD player. Is there a hack, or something else, so I can use the DVD player?

nope, but u can use a regular remote but u need the infrared adapter

You can play DVDs without the remote, but, to my knowledge, not without the receiver you plug into a controller port.

You can probably find a cheap knock-off on ebay. I got mine when a seller bundled it in when I bought the HD AV kit.

how do you play it w/out the remote but w/ the adapter? i lost my remote ages ago but i still have the adapter plugged in.

I think RCA universal remotes work.

If you have a universal remote try the RCA codes. Otherwise you can buy a cheap RCA remote. Office Max has them FAR every once and a while.
