Did Jason Schwartman leave Phantom Planet?
I saw them play a couple of days ago and they had another drummer that wasn't Jason. I tried researching it online but my findings have been inconclusive.

Yep.
From AllMusic.com:
Sadly for fans, Jason Schwartzman annouced his departure from the band in August 2003. He decided that it wasn't his time to be in a band and wanted to pursue other things. However, he did appear on Phantom Planet's 2004 self-titled third album, along with new drummer Jeff Conrad.

If it weren't for Jason, I would have never listened to this band. I'm not saying that he's the heart-and-soul of the band. They were, and still are a very good listen. I'm just saying that I wouldn't have initially listened to them if I didn't notice Schwartzman on the cover. It was sort of an eyecatcher.
What's he doing next? I want to see him in some more movies! Maybe he'll return with Wes Anderson on something, someday, maybe.

I listened to the band because Jason was in it as well. The Guest was a decent album...not great but good. I don't have their new disc, but everyone that I know that's heard it hates it.
Hopefully, Jason uses the extra time he's got now to pick some decent roles. He started so strong with Rushmore and everything since has pretty much been crap.

I really started to listen to them only after this most recent album so Schwartman's participation is relatively meaningless to me. Their previous albums while excellent for others isn't really my taste. I'm enjoying their new direction.

I picked up a cd of theirs because the guy in Donnie Darko is the lead singer.

I saw them in Athens a couple of weeks ago. We met the guitarist at a coffee shop and he guestlisted me and 3 of my friends for the show which was extremely nice of him. They were pretty good and then we went backstage after and gave him a copy of my bands music. It was all pretty cool.

Pretty good album and there are quite a few songs that are better than "California". The first half and second half are different than one another, too.

I bought this one a few years ago because I was seeing them open for Incubus. It's a fun rock album. It's got a few greats songs, a few o.k. ones. It's worth checking out if you can find it cheap.
