How do you tell what DVD drive an XBOX has without opening the box?

I want an XBOX but I don't want to get one with the infamous Thompson drive. Is there much of a chance to still get one? I searched google and couldn't find a date when they switched the the Philips and Samsung drives. Is there any way to tell by the serial number? Or am I worrying for nothing?

Last two they sould be 06. Also look and make sure it was made in China. That is what I did and got a Samsung.

The last two numbers on this xbox are 03 look for 06. Also look on top of the box to see where teh console was made.

Yes, because mine is a Philips. By the serial number I expected a Samsung, but that isn't what I got.

I have a Thompson.

For the most part no problems. However, I do think Crimson Skies was acting weird in the drive. I've had few Live CS sessions end abruptly due to "a dirty disc".

I've had this a few times recently with Crimson Skies on Live as well (Thompson drive in a bought-on-release-date Xbox). Generally, it occurs right after the match is over. Other than that, my Thompson drive is still going strong (knock on wood).
