I tell my friends to watch the Shield, they tell me to watch 24. Who's missing out?

I'd say the Shield is better, possibly one of the best on TV at the moment. Though I enjoy 24 greatly there seems to be too many filler eps that you just don't get in the Shield probably due to the season lengths for each show.

I agree, 24 would probably be better if it was "12". Not the same ring to it though...

The Shields, hands down. Mackey's, at times, heartbreaking family situation easily blows away any contrived plot devices from '24'.

The little things, like the younger daughter showing the autistic brother how to eat a piece of pizza, are done so much better in The Shield than '24'. That whole sequence with "All My Little Words" to wrap up an episode from Season 1 is fantastic stuff.

The Shield doesn't tend to focus on the family situation of the main character as much as '24' claims to, but it's much more effective.

I watch both, but "The Shield" blows away "24" in every category.

Well I don't watch 24, so you know my answer.

That's a tough call. Both of those shows are so good for different reasons. I don't think I could pick just one of the two.

BTW, they're on at different times (and the Shield airs twice in a row), so watch both.

The Shield is the better show, no doubt about it.

I like them both. They have their strengths and weaknesses, and both are among the best shows on TV right now (along with Nip/Tuck and a handful of others). That said, I don't think The Shield is OVERWHELMINGLY better than 24, and 24 should be garnering some votes to reflect that. I voted for 24.

I too watch them both. Tivo lets me timeshift everything to when its convenient for me. I'll be watching 24's Day 3 Season Finale tonight, and will enjoy the next Shield tomorrow.

I have one question about 'The Shield'. How is the story from show to show. Is it episode like in an 'Alias', or '24' sort-of way, or is it more like each show is stand alone like any other drama?

The Shield, hands-down.

It is about half and half. The main storylines carry for a season or more, but there are lots of cases that only last for one episode.

I watch and like both shows, but The Shield is better. 24 has some great episodes, but there are too many episodes in between that aren't very good. That being said, I look forward to watching the 24 season finale tonight, and The Shield right after it.

Thanks Jeremy517. I like it better when a show is more tighlty tied together during a season like '24' and 'Alias', but I've heard so many people rave about 'The Shield' that I might give it a try. I just might have to pick the season sets of 'The Shield' sometime.

For basic cable I dont think anything crosses the line more often than the Shield. It probally ranks with the Sopranos violence-wise.
