Ebert tells LOTR fans to "get a life" (EE related)

I was watching Ebert & Roeper and the video pick of the week was Return of the King. Roeper stated that the theatrical edition has some cool extras but warned the viewers that an extended version is coming out. Roeper said how LOTR fans will buy anything. Ebert replied with something similar to "yeah I don't get it how they can watch 4 hours of extra for each movie, to those people, I say get a life." It seemed like Ebert was upset about New Line double dipping and blamed the fans for buying it.

I don't blame new line for double dipping because they tell the public in advance about it. I'm a big LOTR fan, so of course I have/will double dip on the trilogy. I'm not being forced to buy them and I appreciate the quality of the DVD, so props to New Line for releasing the EE's.

useless trivia: Ebert gave Van Helsing a thumbs up (yeah, I'm bitter).

HOW DARE HE!!

Perhaps this thread alone backs up his statement. It's a great movie and all, but to start a thread about what one man thinks about the film and/or the cult like following seems to only back up his statement even more.

Wow.. that useless trivia which has nothing to do with his comment makes it an even more stand point that he is clearly insane and should be dragged to a mental hospital. You may be bitter, but you should take what one man says with the grain of salt.

Ebert should follow-up his stapling his stomache with stapling his fat mouth shut.

Looking forward to the EE release of ROTK, with the DTS sound, extra footage and better packaging case its a no brainer of a purchase for real LOTR fans.

Ebert didn't have his stomach stapled - he lost it the old fashioned way.

I think his statements are being taken out of context by the original poster...Ebert's a huge film fan, I don't know why he would be opposed to extras - perhaps his statements were made in jest.

I found it odd that he doesn't appreciate the extras, yet he's a movie critic. The useless trivia was sarcasm to what he said about the fans. I'll put the wink face, so readers will get it.

No double dip for me.....will buy the EE when it is released. If I can borrow the current release from a friend, so be it. If not...guess I will finally see this in November.

I wonder if they even realize that the EE's are longer cuts of the films and not just additional extras with the same movies.

Sometmes I think that Ebert-bashers are the ones that need to "get a life".

I have this episode TiVoed but I haven't watched it yet. I'm going to see what he actually said. I have a feeling there's more to the story.

I find it amusing that a guy who has spent the better part of his life in a darkened theater is telling others to "get a life"

Ebert has completely lost it. I once used to look forward to his commentary. Now he gives the thumbs up to utter crap like Van Helsing. For shame, Roger. Gene Siskel is turning over in his grave.

OMG, he said something negative about LOTR! How dare he! Guess that will automatically bring him down to the level of lepers and child molesters.

It would be nice if people would actually listen to the context of what Ebert said before getting all crazy...the "get a life" comment was said after Roeper made a joke about fans probably having to wait again for the accordion-size trilogy set that will take 6 years to watch...it was a JOKE, and Ebert's comment was in reference to fans waiting for this fictitious set.

So RELAX, people. Frankly, I applaud Ebert for saying fans get tired of double diping.

Haha... God bless Ebert.

LOTR Fanboys... take a deep breath and repeat to yourself "everything is alright" as you wrap your arms around your LOTR/TTT EE's while in the fetal position.

I've never liked Ebert, so I don't take anything says to heart. Good point novaguy200 about the comments though.

Do you call it irony when someone takes something (Ebert's joke)out of context saying it proves one thing (Ebert saying LOTR fans need to get a life), and the fact that people take umbrage with those very word really does prove the misconception?

Exactly. From my experience with the first two, I'd say the EE's are the "real" versions of the movie and they TE's are the "edited" versions.

Just wait until the Star Wars DVDs hit the shelves... how many sets (VHS) do you already have before this one hits the shelves?

Me, I've got 3... here's to 4...

That's his job. It IS his life, and he has a life outside of work, like... most of us do.
