Anyone collect AFI Top 100 list or Best Picture Winners?

Hey all, anyone collect the DVDs of movies from the AFI top 100 list or Best Picture winners? I've been collecting both lately, I tend to find i enjoy the films from the AFI list moreso than the Oscar winners. Its not that the Oscar winners aren't good it's just that the AFI list is more complete and includes multiple movies from the same year. So far I have 48 AFI DVDs and 36 Best Picture winners.

I am trying to see all the top 50 films by Dec. first. I am not trying to collect them but buy many of them anyway especially if they are good special editions.

I collect AFI 100 and Best Picture winners that I'm interested in.

As of now, I only have 32 AFI 100's (with 36 I'd be interested in owning). For BP's... I own 13.

I collect the Oscar Best Picture winners. Been an Oscar fan since I was a wee little one, so it is the only real list that I am trying to collect.

I have a ways to go, though. I am a little more then halfway there I think.

While I think the AFI 100 is a good way to introduce yourself to noteworthy films you haven't previously seen, I really have no interest in owning all of them. Rather focus on movies that are my personal favorites.

As for the Oscars, don't really value their choices at all, either for collecting or for viewing suggestions. They've made far too many poor decisions over the years.

YES! Was wondering the same thing...

I realized I had a bunch of them already, but many were on VHS. I count those on my spreadsheet but they all have an asterisk. I'd like to eventaully own them all on DVD only, but, some of the older 1:33 to 1 films aren't SO bad that way. <prepares to get flamed>

As far as Oscar is concerned, I'm just gonna get the ones from when I was born until present. Many of the better Oscar winners are on the AFI list anyway, (30 by my count) so I still think I'll have a respectable library.

38 BP winners, 52 AFI top 100.

Here's the thread that got me started on collecting them. Some of the releases are out of date, but it has a nice table for tracking which ones you have:

I collect Best Picture winners, although I'm in no hurry to get them all right away. I'll pick them up as decent versions come out on DVD. Anymore if a Best Picture winner is released I'll pick it up, but there are some that I probably won't get to for a long long time. I have 31 Best Picture winners so far, and another five or six that I'll be picking up in the next couple of months.

I haven't been trying to collect the AFI list, but I have 39 titles already without trying, plus another 20 or so on my wish list.

I'd like to get them all eventually. Here are the ones I'm missing...

12. SUNSET BOULEVARD (1950)
21. GRAPES OF WRATH, THE (1940)
30. TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE (1948)
37. BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES, THE (1946)
54. ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT (1930)
63. STAGECOACH (1939)
69. SHANE (1953)
73. WUTHERING HEIGHTS (1939)
74. GOLD RUSH, THE (1925)
76. CITY LIGHTS (1931)
80. WILD BUNCH, THE (1969)
81. MODERN TIMES (1936)
82. GIANT (1956)
85. DUCK SOUP (1933)
90. JAZZ SINGER, THE (1927)
92. PLACE IN THE SUN, A (1951)
93. APARTMENT, THE (1960)
96. SEARCHERS, THE (1956)
97. BRINGING UP BABY (1938)
100. YANKEE DOODLE DANDY (1942)

Stagecoach is on my TiVo and All Quiet on the Western Front is scheduled to be on sometime during the next two weeks. They won't count against my list but at least I'll get to see them.

I don't have a list but I'll buy a film if I know it's won an Oscar. Looking back, I have most of the best pictures until I reach the 30's and 40's.

Slightly off-topic, I find that the Oscar winners I enjoy the most and the ones I'm most likely to have in my collection already are the ones in the special effects, audio and video categories.

I dont make a big effort to collect them, but I do keep up with how many I have...right now I have 63 of them. Its just a guide to give me some ideas of some good movies I may want to check out at some point...same thing with the IMDb top 250, though that one changes all the time.

My old thread is still alive. I'm currently at 61 AFI and 40 BP. That's pretty much gonna hold tight until Gone With the Wind, Raging Bull, and a few others come out. I've pretty much gotten all the ones I want.

I'm still collecting the AFI ones. 8 more to go, hopefully all get released sometime. I don't think they all belong on the list, but I think all are worth seeing, at least the ones I've seen.

Everyone yells at the guy collecting the Criterions, but jumps all over this. Can someone explain the difference to me?
