Is the Philips 727 off the market?

I was reading some old threads about this player and it sounds really good, but when I go to look for it online I can't find it anywhere. It's not even on Ebay. Is there a newer replacement model or something?

I believe it is. I looked for it everywhere with no luck. I finally got a Target salesperson to sell me their floor model for half price.

I went to Target Monday to look for one for my parents and all they had was a display model too. They also had a couple in box of the Philips 642s.

Happily, I bought 2 of these and they are pumping R2 and R3 DVDs into my two TVs, a Sony 36" flat Wega and a JVC 36" "Idontknowwhat."

If you "froogle" the philips 727, you'll find a few still out there, but at inflated prices.

My Target store had their remaining stock of 727 marked down by about 10% and they had a sticker that proclaimed them discontinued. I was disappointed and considered buying another as a spare. Hopefully I won't regret passing on it.

the philips 642 could be hack making it region free and it also could play divx also.
here's the hack:
Region code
1) Open tray.

2) On the remote press "5 6 9 " then the "OK" button

3) For Region 2 Disc Select using the UP/Down arrow buttons and choose firmware "VER0409 630/00 01 2" then press the "OK" button again. More with the last digit 2 in the firmware number might work but I didn't try them.

DO NOT REBOOT SYSTEM AFTER THESE STEPS IT WILL GIVE YOU A SCRAMBLED PICTURE. It doesn't hurt the system it just does it for some reason?

4) Insert that Region 2 Disc and it should work fine.

To return to Region 1 just follow the steps but chose
"VER0409 642/17 02 01" in step 3.

Thanks for the info dude8.

Actually, I'm not in any rush to get a region free player at the moment, I already have three besides another R1 player. I had wanted to upgrade my parent's R1 and the 727 had a good track record so I thought I'd look for one but it's not urgent.

Good to know about the 642 though, I'll keep it in mind if I get in a pinch. I heard the picture was not so great though. Is that true?
(Something about the PAL->NTSC conversion not being good.)

I've seen about 10 727's at Fry's. It's funny about Fry's....you know that Cyberhome CH-500 that everyone was talking about early last year that apparently went off the production line? Well, every other month or so, I see about 10 of them in stock at Fry's (the CH-500 does PAL conversion correctly by the way). Just in case some of you can't get ahold of the Philips 727, you might want to look for this one (although the Cyberhome is a bit of a pain in the ass to use).

Just checked, and Fry's online still has the Philips 726 available. Same as the 727 except it lacks the optical out, right?

I agree with you on the CH-500. I hate it, especially the remote, but it does the job.

hey, thought id mention for ppl in Canada, or Ontario at least, Wal-Mart has the Philips 727 for about $80CAN. I just picked up mine the other day and it works fine w/ code an all. I saw it at two Wal-Marts so figure they're stocking it all over, though i may be mistaken.

I have one for sale if interested (727), just one week old; got one as a gift so no need for two (although keeping it as a backup would be nice). Email me if interested.

Fantastic player. Selling at cost, thought I'd just help fellow DVDTalkers out.

The hack for the 726 is exactly the same as for the 727. Basically, they're the same player.

By the way, I saw some 727s for sale at a Lexington, Ky. Meijer store just a week or so ago (I think for about $75-80). That is where I bought my 726 a year or so back for $70.

I have a question regarding the multi-angle icon problem people are having with this player. How many DVDs are actually affected by it? I have nearly 300 DVDs and I can't even think of any that have a multi-angle feature. Can anyone name some examples of popular DVDs that will have this problem? Thanks.

Oh, and UKingdom, YGM.

I saw it more frequently in Mallrats. It happened during the opening and closing credits of Jackie Brown and Pulp Fiction. in Mallrats it seemed to happen more frequently.
