Optical vs Coax audio cable?

Are there any pros and/or cons on using one or the other?

You won't hear a difference in the sound, between them.
There is a difference in price, with the optical being more expensive.
With digital coax being wire, there's the CHANCE of interferrence, if used near some power cords and such.
Optical is said to be better for long runs of cable, but expensive. The thing to lookout for with optical is to make sure it doesn't get crimped, and make sure you get a good connection. Make sure it makes the snap-in noise when attaching it.

It's weird that in the seven-year history of DVD this question has never been asked before.

Yes.

Mainly they have to do with how many devices and available connections you have. I tend to prefer coax because it is more durable.
