Scene transitions on DVD causes a problem

I have a Mitsubishi 48413 projection HDTV attached to a Sony
DVP-NC665P 5 disc changer via component cables. When playing
several of my X-files Season 1 and 2 DVDs a strange effect occurs.
When there are transitions between scenes the picture appears
to jump or flash. Its hard to describe.... The problem is worse when there is a scene where they are constantly switching between actors faces or different scenes. When stepping through the scene transition in slow motion, there is a frame that appears to be a composite of the previous frame and the next frame. I guess this is to somehow cause a smoother transition. However it causes a strange effect on my setup, kind of like a quick jump or flash in the picture. I've tried several other discs, but don't see the problem. So far it only appears on the X-files discs. Does anyone know what could cause a problem like this ?

I tried these DVD's on another player attached to a different
TV set (old analog set) and don't see the problem.

Try setting the DVD player to video mode instead of film mode. This sounds like the progressive output of video material is causing problems on your Sony player. On an analog player you wouldn't see it because it's not showing the signal as progressive.

Thanks a lot ! That fixed the problem. The Sony player
has 3 modes, Progressive Auto, Video, and Film.
Setting to Progressive Video plays flawlessly wheras
setting to Auto or Film causes this problem. According
to the manual it has something to do with conversion of
the signal, TV shows are 30 frames/sec wheras Film
is 24 frames/sec.

Glad I could help. Just remember to set it back to film or auto mode for movies.
