Pennnies From Heaven With Steve Martin coming!

From DVD FILE

Just in from Warner Home Video is another wave of catalog releases Getting the remastered anamorphic widescreen treatment on July 6th is the Sean Connery convent thriller The Name of the Rose and a Governator Edition of Red Sonja, starring some guy named Schwarzenegger, while July 27th will see the release and the underrated Steve Martin and Bernadette Peters version of Pennies from Heaven as well as Dennis Potter's BBC miniseries version, also titled Pennies from Heaven. All of the flicks are presented in anamorphic widescreen and Dolby 2.0 surround and movie-only aside from trailers, although the BBC miniseries is spread across three discs, is presented in its original 4:3 full screen and also includes an audio commentary with the filmmakers. List price will be $19.95 for the flicks and $39.95 for the BBC series.

Great news, nice to see the BBC version is coming too. The Singing Detective set must have sold well.

Thanks for the news. The lyrics to some of those old songs are pure genius. Looking forward to the DVD.

Just from memory:
"A long time ago, a million years b.c.,

the best things in life, were absolutely free,

but no one appreciated, a sky that was always blue,

and no one congratulated, a moon that was always new.

So it was planned that they would vanish now and then,

and you must pay before you get them back again......

That's what clouds were made for,

and you shouldn't be afraid, for.....

everytime it rains, it rains......Pennies from Heaven, etc...."

or something like that, anyway.

Re: Pennnies From Heaven With Steve Martin coming!

I have nothing against the Steve Martin version, however this is the best bit of news:
...as well as Dennis Potter's BBC miniseries version, also titled Pennies from Heaven...

All Christopher Walken fans *must* watch this movie, okay? Seriously. His part is not very big, but he does a tap-dance/strip-tease while lip-syncing "Let's Misbehave", it's one of the best things ever put into any movie ever.

My list grows smaller by the day, this is great news! Very interested in the British version as well, could make an interesting double feature....

And yes, all Walken fans should see his dance number.

I've never seen Pennies from Heaven, but I've heard greta things about the Steve Martin movie, and I certainly enjoyed the Singing Detective*, so I'll probably wind up picking up both versions.

* The Michael Gambon version, not the Robert Downey Jr. version

It came out... It's wonderful.... Better than I could ever imagine from its rare TV showings. Truly, one of the great masterpieces of the XXth century. And it went almost unnoticed by fans and critics alike. I bought copies for everyone on my Christmas list...
Favourite lyric...

"T'would be so sweet
if you could meet your fate, dear!
T'would be the great event
of nineteen-twenty-eight, dear!"
