Question about XBox
Ive been thinking about getting a Xbox for some time and last week my DVD player broke, so I figured now is the best time, because Xbox plays DVDs, so I'd be killing two birds with one stone.
However, I built up a large collection of CD-R's with mpg's of old 80's music videos and classic TV shows, my old DVD player played mpg files.
So my question is... Does the Xbox play mpg files off of CD-R's?

I'm pretty sure the answer is no. But I'm sure someone who knows for sure will chime in soon.
Or you could just do a search of either this forum or the internet. Here's a good link to start with http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&l...=Google+Search
Someone here had an xbox FAQ but I can't find it in my 30 seconds of searching. If I knew you better I'd search longer, but I'm on the way out. Good luck.

It will if you get an Xbox with the Samsung drive (buying used will be the only sure way to get this). There are three types of drives - two of these won't read CD-R's. Try a search on Google (or here) for more info (and maybe a picture of the CD-R readable drive.

Ok, I just checked my xbox for you turborobb. I have the phillips drive (there are 3 different DVD drives possible, see the following thread for a visual pic of the 3, thanks to Young! http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthr...hreadid=343627) and it plays neither cd-rs encoded as a video CD, or cd-rs with mpegs just copied onto them.
Hope that helps. Maybe the xboxs with the new samsung drives are better for that purpose.

Unless you get it modded it won't play any video discs other than DVD. Also as mentioned before, only certain ones will play CD-Rs. Many of them will play CD-RWs though, so you could convert your collection to that if it works with the one you get.

For what you'd pay for the Xbox DVD remote, you can buy a DVD player.
For video CD viewing, I think you're better off with a $25-50 DVD player. I'd still get an Xbox though(for the games).

Microsoft has has been using the Samsung drive on all there systems since June of last year. If you flip over the x-box, it will say when the system was made. I just purchased a used Xbox with a day of June 23rd, and it was a Samsung drive.
