Does anyone know if the Eliot Gould movie, The Silent Partner is coming soon? Great Christopher Plummer bad guy, sadistic, evil, deadly....

Fantastic movie. I'll second the wish for a release. Is it out in Canada?

I just checked Amazon.ca... no DVD (the only listing is for the VHS tape.)

A very good little film... I'm surprised no one released it when L.A. Confidential was hot (as Curtis Hanson did the screenplay.)

No, this near-perfect thriller, certainly among the best ever filmed, is not out on DVD, even here in Canada. Rest assured, it will come eventually. I was lucky enough to have snapped up a used copy of the very old (released in '83 or thereabouts) LD about ten years ago.

Yeah this needs to come out, NOW. I think I read on another forum that HBO has the rights to the film.

HBO Home Video did the VHS release. It is listed as OOP at Amazon.ca (I didn't check Amazon.com), but B&N has it for sale for ~$10 (if you want something to tide you over until it gets a DVD release.)

One of the things I love about this forum - if I forget about a great movie, someone here will remind me! Yes, this is a winner all the way, and I'd love to be able to dump my VHS for a DVD!

This would look great as a Criterion release.

Just realized - isn't this the movie where the very busty bank employee is wearing a t-shirt that says "Severe Penalty For Early Withdrawl" ?

Bad News Update:

Someone at HTF asked the Warner Home Video reps. about this film during their March 2004 live chat.

Their response: "No plans for THE SILENT PARTNER."

This would look great as a Criterion release.
i was thinking Blue Underground myself as it straddles the line well between high quality and violent exploitation fare.

does anyone know if Warner does actually control the rights to it?
i wouldn't give up hope if they do.
they were alwasy being asked about Over The Edge and always said that the sales on VHS weren't enough to justify it on dvd, but that evidently has changed so we could still see TSP in 2005 or '06

Yes, they do...otherwise, they would have responded to the HTF question "We don't have the rights to THE SILENT PARTNER." (This is what they did when asked about some Fox titles.) And they also made it very clear that do not license films "to third parties," so there will be no Criterion, Blue Underground, or anyone else's release of this title in R1.

Hopefully, one of the HK DVD distributors will get/already has the Asian rights to this title and puts out an "all-region" NTSC disc.

The Silent Partner was originally a Vestron Video title (and that is what my LD is). When Vestron folded their titles eventually ended up going all over the place. Video Tr(?)/Anchor Bay had TSP for a VHS release in 1990. As far as I can tell, the latest VHS release, in 1997, was from HBO. Time-Warner owns HBO.

the movie was partially financed By hbo, just like FORT APACHE THE BRONX, GOOD GUYS WEAR BlACK, GO TELL THE SPARTANS, BELL JAR, CHANGELING, and they now control these titles. And hbo is Warner, so sorry, no criterion, BU, AB, unless Warner goes out of business.

Weird....I saw this movie in the theater back when it opened and haven't thought about it in years until I spotted a copy of Silent Witness in a local store. After realizing it was the wrong film and remembering how awesome SILENT PARTNER was, I was disappointed to discover that it was not out on DVD. Great movie; well paced and very intense.
