Quentin Tarantino:Great filmmaker, or JackAss?
I will take the middle of the road option that he is a JackAss that happens to be a great filmmaker. I love watching his movies, but everytime he either gets on a commentary mic, does an interview, or makes an appearance anywhere in front of the camera, I automatically think he's a jerk.

What about him makes him a jerk? He's kind of geeky in his passion for films, but I think most of us would probably fall into that category.
I saw him speak live at the Egyptian Theater and saw nothing about him, his demeanor, or his words that I would attribute to a jackass.

I wouldn't say Jackass, but the guy does have a big ego. Then again if you were in his shoes I'm sure you would also have a little bit of inflated head.
Great options though..
Here's a poll for you:

please check one. Not much of a choice is there?

I voted jackass, but also a great filmmaker. That might be a bit strong, but Tarantino is kinda annoying at times. But he's a film geek. Does he have an ego? Eh, if he does he might as well...he's a great filmmaker. I'll stand by that whether he makes another good film or not.

to his knowledge about film. Do many modern filmmakers know that movies were made before, say, Back to the Future? And they even make movies outside the United States!
to his established influences.
to his scripts that he didn't direct (True Romance, Natural Born Killers)
to his driving passion to make good movies.
to his four films.
to his comments on lazy CGI filmmaking.
to his appearance on Conan O'Brian. He came off as a really cool, fun guy. Haven't really seen him anywhere else...other than that SNL, and couple of documentries.
Maybe I'm just a big fat jerk.
That is all.

I can't call him a jackass after watching his Charlie Rose appearance on the Reservoir Dogs: SE. The guy knows his movies and directors and isn't afraid to talk about them. That's something I respect.

It's an objective fact that he's a jackass, that much is not up for dispute.
However, whether you think he's a great filmmaker or not is entirely subjective and unrelated to the jackass factor.

I think he's a fantastic director and writer, and a pretty decent actor. He's not so much a jackass as he is arrogant, but I believe he has reason to be. He does make awesome movies. Also, I kind of like that he isn't modest about how much talent he has, it can be really interesting to listen to him, especially when he talks about film.

His Conan appearance was... bad. My brother and I had the exact same response (150 miles apart)... "No Quentin... just stop. You've worked yourself into a trap, and you have no chance of reviving this interview..."
Otherwise GREAT filmmaker

but did you see him on Leno back when Kill Bill came out. Drunk off his ass/high who knows. Come on man, show some respect. Made a complete 'jackass' of himself.

Have you've seen the Tonight show with Jay Leno? I personally don't see how you can get through ten minutes of it being sober. It's beyond suckage!

My Favorite but yeah, a little goofy
Well - He's my fav director, no doubt about it, but I will say that he is also a jackass.
I remember watching him on TV with Pam Grier right before the theatrical release of Jackie Brown (sorry, I can't remember what show it was) and he was trying to talk, well, let's say, "hardcore" he was trying to change his voice and the whole 9 - it was so damn goofy but expected - He's a great director and writer, no doubt about it - but he definitely has a problem.
