Should I buy the Kurosawa samurai box set?

First thing I'd like to know is, what are the chances of any of these DVDs being re-released by Criterion in the near future? Any recent rumors?

Secondly, is there any advantage at this point to buying the four movies separately (Seven Samurai, Hidden Fortress, Yojimbo, Sanjuro)? It's my understanding that the DVDs in the set are identical to the individual releases, just minus the UPC. Is this correct? Also, what is the spine number situation? Do the DVDs retain their original spine number? Does the cardboard box itself have a number?

Thanks.

Not sure about your first question but I thought there was a rumor about Seven Samurai being re-released. Of course, this is the second printing of SS and not the original one. Haven't heard diddly about the other 3, though.

No advantage of buying individually, that I can see. You are correct about the missing UPCs.

The DVDs retain their original spine number.

The box itself does not have a spine number. It's pretty flimsy and was made just to keep the DVDs together for the store shelf.

Very helpful. Thanks.

For those with this set, what did you do with the paper case? Do you display the set in it, or did you trash it? Is the case open on one end to display the DVD spines?

Re: Should I buy the Kurosawa samurai box set?

During a recent HTF chart, Lee Kline of Criterion said "We're going to be doing some tests on Seven Samurai soon to see if we can make it look better than the previous version very soon." He also pointed out that original negatives and master postives don't exist for many classic Japanese films, so read into that what you will.

As for the cardboard box, it's open on the bottom and yes, I do keep my discs in it.

I took mine out of the box, since I arrange my Criterions by spine number. I kept the box, though.

The box set is worth every penny. Use every deal you can get and buy it. Kurosawa's work is amazing, and you'll be able to see that in this boxset.

I put mine in numerical order as well, and put empy cases in the box set and put it at the end of my CC dvd's next to the hitchcock one

There is an Interweb rumour that Criterion have already had Linda Hoaglund create a new translation for Seven Samurai for a new DVD with a new transfer, new extras, etc.

Could be true.

Might be jive.

While we're on the subject, which Criterions genuinely NEED a new transfer? Which are currently non-anamorphic?

Playtime - High-def 70mm transfer, 1.66:1 anamorphic, 6-track surround would be great.

Andrei Rublev - Anamorphic 2.35:1.

Amacord isn't anamorphic, is it?

Brazil - If this was re-released in anamorphic it would probably sell very well. Most people would double-dip. Especially if Dolby and DTS 5.1 remixes were included.

Sorry if this hijacks the thread.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this was mentioned in the booklet for Throne Of Blood...at least the part about the new subtitles. Hoprfully, it'll be a question of 'when', not 'if'.

I think all the Criterions before and including Sanjuro (#53) lack anamorphic transfers.

As far as I know, the first Criterion DVD with an anamorphic transfer was Insomnia (#47).

Ok, next order of business: Where is the cheapest place to get this?

DVDPlanet has it for $64.96 shipped. That seems like a hell of a deal, but it would go against my DVD buying ethics to not first ask if there is a better deal. Any current discounts going on for DVDPlanet?

Caiman, DEFINITELY get the box set. All four films are exceptional movies and rank at the top of my list.

I just checked and it looks as if DVD planet is your best bet price-wise. You're essentially getting all four movies at the discounted price for three of them.

Yeah that's how I saw it too. At first I had ordered Seven Samurai and The Hidden Fortress separately, but then I watched Sanjuro yesterday and absolutely loved it, so I decided to buy that one too. But then I realized it would probably be cheaper to throw in Yojimbo and get the box set than to buy just the other three. So I canceled that order, and will place a new order for the box set tonight.

This set is definitely a great deal. It's like getting a free movie.

That is pretty funny. Listen, you are very new and a lot of the veterans on these boards are possibly amused by you......for now. If you don't stop acting like a 10-year-old (even though you say you're 25), those same people will start losing patience with you and you will not be taken seriously, or (as you stated in yesterday's thread about not getting any respect in here) receive any respect. If you want to see what the possible future may hold for you (in terms of how the majority on these boards lose patience with silliness), just do a search for the username "danol" and start reading through some of his old posts. That could be you very easily if you continue on like this.

No, he'll never be danol. danol was cool. This guy sucks.

And he's 25?! Good Lord, he acts like an 8 year old.

Maybe he has the Downs?
