what was the first movie you saw with subtitles?

(note it does not have to be at the theaters, it could be a dvd, or an anime also)

That's a good question. I wish I could remember but I was most likely a little kid.

Same here. I wish I could remember, though I'm sure it didn't bother me as at least 30% of the movies I watch these days are subtitled.

Must have been in high school french class. I remember watching a few french movies on video in class and even taking a field trip to see one at an art house theater. Sadly I can't remember what any of those films were now.

It was some jailhouse movie that my dad rented in the mid-80's.

To this day, I still don't know what the name of that movie was. My guess is that it was either French or Hungarian and it took place entirely in prison. Anyone help?

Color? Black & white? Older? Newer? Was it about an attempted escape?

The Hole?

The first film that I distinctly recall was the 1977 Greek film Iphigenia which was a special screening for our Junior High 9th Grade History class. I think for the most part the class was pretty much uninterested in the movie on the whole, except for a brief nude scene that had all of us giggle in hysterics.

(Color) It appeared to be made in the 80's . Here's the scene that I remembered the most:

A new inmate arrives and tries to find a seat at lunch time. A baldheaded inmate says to him (Wherever he tries to sit) that "the seat is taken". Finally, when the inmate gets to sit down, the bald guy gets up and spits all on his lunch.

Ring a bell?

whooooosh! right over my head . . . sorry charlie

I think my first subtitled film was when I was eight or nine or something. It was a film version of Carmen. I was with my grandmother and aunt, big fans of the opera. I couldn't follow it too well.

First that I ever watched, start to finish: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

This is also my ONLY subtitled film I've ever watched, start to finish.

First in a theater was Like Water for Chocolate. That was 1992, so I was in 8th grade. Wow I feel old

I might have seen something subtitled on TV, but I don't remember. I saw Das Boot when I was very young but it was the old dubbed version.

Hard Boiled--watched it on VHS with some friends of mine about 9 years ago. It was a terrible copy, but I still remember being blown away by it.

I am surprised no has mentioned the subtitled scene from the rarely seen Tom Hanks comedy: Volunteers
