GameStop shelves N-Gage

[UPDATE] In "reallocation of inventory," GameStop drops N-Gage from a third of its retail locations.

Nokia today confirmed to GameSpot that specialty retailer GameStop has pulled N-Gage units from 450 of its stores which previously had carried the hybrid phone/game deck. "GameStop is reallocating inventory and efforts on locations where sales have been strongest," a Nokia spokesperson told GameSpot today. GameStop operates almost 1,500 retail locations worldwide, although most of those stores are located in the U.S.

Nokia learned of the GameStop decision only this week and was unable to comment as to how common a "reallocation" strategy is within the GameStop organization. The Nokia spokesperson indicated the news would not affect Nokia's backing of the device. Since its launch last October, the N-Gage has come in for mixed reviews from technology reporters, analysts, and game reviewers. Last week, the Finnish manufacturer reported having shipped 600,000 N-Gage units into the retail channel worldwide since launch.

[UPDATE] As for the N-Gage's status at EB Games, another national game retailer, vice president of merchandising Carol Beck said the company will continue to stock the product in all stores for the foreseeable future.

Aaah yes the perfect system to replace Ngage. Something has to collect dust in the store if the Ngage isn't there.

Surely, this can mean only one thing: Nintendo is about to go the way of Sega!

Absolutely. n-gage never came with a warning that it will damage your eyesight.

Other than that, what's wrong with the comparison? They were both overpriced, poorly-designed machines that had little to no software support because everybody in the industry, except for those who mystifyingly green-lighted their production, knew they had zero chance for success.

Wow. Someone equates bashing a specific piece of hardware with bashing an entire company... will wonders never cease.

Care to refute any of my comparisons, or do you just launch into company-specific damage control involuntarily?

I guess not if someone who wasn't even in the thread finds it irresistable to join in. I'll just thank you for bumping it with your ironic condemnation.

Anybody want to take a substantive shot at explaining why even a joking "Please don't insult the Virtual Boy like that" or "as much as a failure that the virtual boy was, comparing it to a n-gage us just plain wrong" holds any water?
