Hahaha, I just happened to be watching this right before 24 came on, and I was able to capture it on my DVR just in time. I had been asking myself, do I really need to have this thing? This answered my question with a solid "YES".

he had to be doing this as a joke, right? theres no way he REALLY thought he had a chance.
he did this for (a) a bet (b) for a laugh or (c) to get on tv.
not because he thought he could win. theres just no way. i bet with the exposure american idol has gotten recently 50% of people who tryout do it for the hell of it and as a joke.
