Korean DVD censorship? (esp. Irreversible & Robocop)
I'm interested in dipping my toes into the Korean DVD market for the various inexpensive (and, importantly, NTSC), anamorphic, exclusive, etc. releases. I'm particularly interested in knowing whether it has been confirmed that Irreversible has been censored. There were rumors about it early on, but I can't find a definitive answer either way. I'm also curious if anyone knows whether the Korean Robocop SE has all of the violent footage from the director's cut intact.
Perhaps we could even use this thread as a compliation of censored/uncensored status of various Korean releases? If such a list already exists, please point me to it.
Thanks,
DJ

Well, I do own Malena and was not aware that if you choose the Korean subs parts of the film will appear blurred (if I understand correctly your claim). I have never used the Korean subs (and why should I) but if this is indeed the case that is something new to me!!

I also own Malena and just ordered Irreversible
I wasn't aware of the selective censorship too and actually confirmed on other forum that Malena wasn't censored after watching the DVD with the English subtitles. But I saw someone mentioning the existence of censorship only if the Korean subtitles is chosen. I was told that Irreversible is censored in the same way as Malena by the CSR at papadvd so I would have to assume that it is the case. Now that I have ordered Irreversible, I really do hope so.

Chucky, when you get a chance can you check your Malena DVD to verify that the censorship does indeed pop-up if you choose Korean subs?
That is a bizarre method of enforcing censorship. You'd think that if they wanted it censored, they wouldn't allow for a work-around. Censors usually have an all-or-nothing mentality.
It's almost like petty retribution! "If you want to be a dirty little pervert, we'll let you see the nudie parts but you can't read the subtitles in your own language at the same time! That'll teach you!! Bwaa haa haaa!!!"
Don't they realize that if someone was really only interested in seeing the nudity, they wouldn't care about subtitles anyway?

Wow, very interesting but true.
I popped in the Korean Malena and I am speechless...
See for yourself...
When English subs are chosen
"Adult" image
When Korean subs are chosen
"Censored" image
Interestingly enough, the CGI only pops up when Korean subs are chosen AND viewing at normal speed. If you play the nudity scene in slow motion or pause it, there is no CGI.
Hope this helps.

Chucky, outside of the Adult Forum you need to link this kind of image. [Benedict]

Ok Guys,
I just heard from another person who has R3 Korean release of Irreversable...
He said that the censorship on that DVD is NOT the same with Malena. He chose English subtitles and still the penis is sprayed...
This is a terrible news...

I have no answer for you per se....but i will strongly advise you NOT to order your French films on Korean discs...as the majority of them happen to be poor PAL to NTSC direct ports..hence...the dreaded "ghosting".
Some obvious examples- NOVO, Dobermann, etc.....
With this said the British double disc is a beauty...

I have La belle noiseuse and it's not censored. Unfortunately, pro-bassoonist's advice should hold here, because the film is a PAL to NTSC port, but for this movie it should really make a difference, as there's very little movement and the movie is pretty much 2 people talking for 4 hours. You do get a few extras, like a Rivette short and interview, among a few others.
