News on the american release of Ys VI

Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim Impressions

At its Gamers' Day today, Konami gave a brief presentation on the upcoming entry in the popular Ys RPG franchise, called Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim. While the series has been immensely popular overseas, most of the entries have never made it to the US. The latest entry in the series was released late last year for the PC in Japan. However, the upcoming version of the game for the PlayStation 2 is slated to feature a number of improvements and additions.

The offering will follow the adventures of Adol Christian and will use the PC version as a base, but quite a bit of work is going into the PlayStation 2 game to make it more than a simple port. While still early in development, Konami reps stated that the game will feature new characters, additional stages, and new music. The graphics will feature new character models and anime cutscenes to showcase the characters and to move the story along. Ys VI will also feature CG movies and artwork from previous Ys games. A video of the game showcased the rich world and character designs found in Ys VI, along with a wonderfully old-school guitar-laden music track.

Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim is slated to ship this winter for the PlayStation 2. Look for more information as it becomes available.

~Chris~

Edit: Sorry, fixed the title.

Wow!! Ys IV!! Which one..?

Ys IV: Mask of the Sun for Super Nintendo
or
Ys IV: Dawn of Ys for Turbo Duo

Both are excellent games.

Oooh.. Ys VI: Ark of Napishtim!!

This game ROCKS so much. Oh my God, I can't even begin. I've got it on PC and it is simply awesome. The graphics, the music, the action, the character art. The only thing I'm lost on is the story since I can't read Kanji. But it's an awesome game. I hope it does well in America, but I'm not sure.. it's got too much gameplay for most of the RPG kids here.

This game is another reason why I'm buying a PS2 this weekend.

I have some screenshots I took playing it at 1280x1024 at home. Anybody want me to post some?

all right!

I think think he meant Ys VI even though the title says YS IV . But a North American Release is really good news.

You're damn right it is. Every game in this series should've been brought over dammit.

I can only dream that Konami will bring over Ys I&II Eternal Story.. even if I've already paid for the import.

Ok Pixy, I'm sure you can help with this.

Is there a website that details out all of the different versions of all the games? I've only played one and two, and since six is coming out I've clearly missed a lot... so I want to get caught up if possible...

Thanks!

Just to clarify, Dawn of Ys and Mask of the Sun are TOTALLY different games. I'm not even sure how they ended up with 2 games titled part IV. Both of them are considered a "We're Sorry" for Ys III (Which I actually like!). Dawn of Ys is considered the fan favorite of the whole series because of the HUUUGE amount of anime scenes and voice acting.

Ys V is when they moved from running into monster to kill them to a more action-based Zelda style. Ys VI further improves this sytem and is just one hell of a blast to play.

Oh my GOD! Those environments are so detailed! Are they sprite characters as well? I'm in love...

Thanks for the pics. I've just added one more game to my "must-buy" list.

Thanks!

Terrific screenshots, the first one is my new desktop background.
I'm confused why the list shows Y's I and II on the playstation 2 cause these games pre-date it.
I have read the other Y's thread in the forum but the lineage hasn't sunk in yet.

I think because they are redoing the original titles for the PS2.

Thanks for all the great info and screenshots Pixy!

Now lets pretend someone that only had a PC and a PS2 wanted to play all those games in English. Is that possible? In the other thread, you've linked me to sites that sell the Japanese PC versions of the first two and the 6th game. And you've also linked me to sites with the english translations for the first two. But what about the 3rd, 4th, 4th, and 5th? I'm wondering if there are emulated versions or anything like that.

Thanks

THE PICTURES DO NOT DO JUSTICE!! You have to imagine in those forest pictures that all the leaves and grass are swaying in the wind plus mutiple layers of scrolling, clounds and fog effects, etc. Yes, all the characters and enemies are sprite graphics except the bosses. The bosses are 3D and they are all freaking HUUUGE.. that last picture is just the first boss you face.

Ys I & II have been remade several times. We're not talking ports, we're talking complete graphical and musical overhauls. The major overhauls were PC-Engine version, then Saturn version, then the new Windows versions. The PS2 one is based on the newest Windows version with further enhancements (voices, new side quests, etc).

Well I listed all official English versions. The Super NES version is the best version of Ys III, ignoring that the Turbo CD one has ROCKIN' music (the rest of the port to TG was crap!). You can get it on eBay for about $3-$5. Ys IV Mask of the Sun has a fan translation available. You'd have to play that on an emulator though, it doesn't even work on an SNES copier!! There's a translation in the works for Ys IV Dawn of Ys, same guy who did all the work on Ys I & II Complete. Once upon a time, the guy who did the Mask of the Sun translation was going to work on Ys V, but no work has been done on it. If you weren't able to get the I & II Complete version, you can buy Ys Book I & II for Turbo Grafx on eBay for about $20 and there are emulators that will play the real CD games. Plus it has most excellent voice acting and super ROCKIN' music.

So simple answer, Ys III and IV on SNES.

Let's note that I don't hate storylines, I hate being bogged down by them. I don't like games like Final Fantasy where the "game" part is simply there to act as an "in-between" to cut scenes. Among many other things, I also don't like that they expect me to beleive that after hours of getting stomped on by giant machines, shot by all kinds of guns and lasers, cut and sliced by swords of all shapes and sizes, and stomped, scratched, and bitten by huge monsters, one little sword stab kills a characters permanently. LAAAME!! WEAK! GHEEEY!!!!!

*ahem*

That being said, the story to the games are alright. I much prefer this style where the story folds out if you CHOOSE to talk to people. I like the story to be created as I'm PLAYING the game, not being forced down my throat.
