Well, this is it, my BIG search for a sleeper hit movie that I've yet to see/buy on DVD. I've got ~90 DVDs in my collection so far, but, it seems lacking in a way of "great dialogue."

I'm looking for movies that YOU think have the best dialogue as far as a great script is concerned. The dialogue must be witty (ie. Pulp Fiction, Fight Club), serious (Shawshank Redemption, Philadelphia), sarcastic (ie. Igby Goes Down, Bottlerocket), humorous (ie. Snatch, Big Lebowski), or intelligent (ie. 12 Angry Men - 1957 version). But most of all intelligent.

I want YOUR vote for a few movies that you think could fit that bill. Most of all the best script and dialogue with good enough acting.

Any takers to give me some suggestions would be appreciated!

North by Northwest (as well as the other hitchcock's I've seen) has some really snappy dialogue with double entendres a-flyin' when Cary and Eva get together.

Charade has some great dialogue, that's all I can think of right now, I will add more as I think of them.

It's not a movie, but the Firefly DVD set has some of the best dialog I have heard in a TV show.

You mentioned Pulp Fiction so you're obviously familiar with Tarantino... but just in case, I would vote for anything Tarantino has made. The opening scene in Reservoir Dogs is classic, when they're in the diner.

I'll also second Fargo. I haven't seen all of Kevin Smith's movies but Clerks is 100% dialog and some of it quite funny.

Ohh, and don't forget the original Star Wars either. Just kidding .

For screwball comedy dialogue, you can't top His Girl Friday.

Obviously anything written by Quentin Tarantino has great believeable dialogue with a witty edge. My personal favorite is any movie directed by Christopher Nolan whose films now include:

1. Memento
2. Insomnia (The remake with Al Pacino/Robin Williams)
3. Following (His first independent Film)

Also, any movie written by Charlie Kaufman has some of the best current dialogue:

1. Being John Malkovich
2. Adaptation
3. Human Nature
4. The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (His Best I believe)

Just curious, are you a writer? Sounds like you're studying up to write a screenplay.
