I am paranoid about 'Platoon: SE'
Hello, I just bought Platoon: Special Edition. It is one of my favorite 'Nam movies and I had a huge hype about getting the DVD version since most reviews were OK.
But the surround sound system was pretty disappointing (as reviews mentioned) but I don't blame them. It is 20 years old yet image quality is excellent.
[Spoiler below]
Is it normal when music is only channelled by front speakers? Or when only certain scenes has surround effect for rain and insects? (eg. intro doesn't have surround effect for insects but other scenes do)
I am really crazy and sensitive about DVDs I buy and often check for the slightest scratch. Do you think the one I have is faulty or somehow not right? Thanks.

no, your is normal, the surround activity is sporadic
I was really disappointed in the audio on this dvd, but like you said, it is an 20 yr. old movie, the video is good, and it is the best available copy of this great nam flick.

I'm disappointed they didn't remaster the sound for this DVD. Transfer is okay, but yeah, sound is tinny and lacks punch, along with rear channel activity. The movie is 18 years old, but still, that's not an excuse... listen to Das Boot DTS! That is better sounding than most new release DTS tracks, and that movie is 22 years old!

I picked this up today and noticed about 10 minutes or so into the disc there's hissing that lasts for about the length of the scene it happens in. It seems to affect both the 2.0 and 5.1 tracks.
Is this normal?

It disappointed me highly to hear it considering the movie is not that old and they've released this thing 3 times.
It's such a shame that certain movies are treated so badly when put on DVD.
