interactive dvd! choose your own adventure on dvd???

Ok, a thought just came to me.

We all love those CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE books, where the story changes all the time and you decide what the characters do, go and say. If you don't love them or know what they are, you are off my buddy list.

what if this technology was applied to dvd? It's of course possible since we have those "enhanced viewing options" on some dvds (you know, like the follow the white rabbit thing)

Dvds are becoming HUGE so i can see a large studio take a gamble on this.

just imagine how neat this would be....

4 -6hours of material in an action thriller starring Robert De Nero.

the movie starts and plays for about 10 minutes. During this time a robber breaks into your house .

a dvd menu thing pops up and says... do you wish to

A) kill attacker with gun under your bed

B) pretend to continue sleeping

C) tackle him down and hurt him, but do not kill him.

and then from then the story begins, with you choosing a character's strategy every 5-10 minutes. (do you open the green or red door? do you eat the month old baked ziti the wizard said would make you strong?)

Depending on what you do, the story changes. Maybe the film will turn into a courtroom drama, with you charged with the robbers murder. or maybe the robber will kidnap your wife if you continue to sleep. who knows.

and of course, if your decisions leads to death, you get to start right back over with your last choice.

ALl of this would look exactly like a professional film, with good actors, special effects, directors and writers.

Now the problem: how would it gain money theatrically? No studio will shell out big bucks for a straight to dvd release. So maybe a single story could be released theatrically, with an expanded interactive version put out on dvd.

It's a stupid pipe dream of mine , but holy crap I would soak this up in a second.

This INTERACTION on dvds would be fun for :

horrors(you are the killer or the victim)

thrillers(find out who killed who)

westerns

sci fi

Romance(maybe)

action

erotica(well of course)

war films

musicals

comedies wouldn't work as great as action, but could still work.

talky indie flims and holocaust drama's would be terrible.

Personally, I would love a new Weekend at Bernies movie in interactive mode. (where do you hide Bernies body today?)

......
........
..........

how many of you would enjoy an interactive movie on dvd type thing?

I'm pretty sure there already are a few. One is based on Sherlock Holmes IIRC. Not sure how to go about searching for them though...

Here's a few http://store.yahoo.com/dvdinternatio...ctive-dvd.html

Read the little blips about the various disks... it seems to be exactly what you are looking for.

I really loved the game TLC...I was thinking about getting their next game Point of View, but haven't yet. The technical improvements between TLC and POV I'm sure area apparent...and POV looks like it would be interesting. Anyone played it?

TLC was great because the game changed by what your preferences were...you would just take these weird Personality-type little quizes and that would change the game. You never really got to a screen where it would say "If you choose to do this, click here, otherwise click here." If wouuld just choose a path based on what you found exciting and interesting as determined by your personality profile.

And the story itself was *bizarre*.....Obviously it wasn't a perfect 'movie', but the interactivity, and the way it used your choices to create the film was really cool--and the fact that, looking back, so many scenes could go so many ways. It was definitely a DVD experience....Might have to check out PoV.
