MTV/EGM Ultimate video game countdown

This show aired last week but I didn't hear about it until it was almost over. Anyone else catch it? Surprisingly, after the most god awful portrayal of gaming on TV known as Spike TV's video game awards, this one was actually ok. They did a lot of things right. Although the parts I saw they seemed to focus a little too much on the hardcore gamer culture like cosplay and guys that like to play 16 player Halo in their basement but its much more positive portrayal of gamers than MTV"s previous show.

I only caught the last few games, but list itself seemed pretty decent too, I think it was a list of the best games from the past couple of years. Names like Halo and Zelda making the top of the list. After introducing a game they cut to a person from EGM talking over footage who had actually knew and understood what they were saying, and actually made intelligent comments. They also went behind the scenes and spoke to Will Wright and video game rock band Neskimos which was cool, and thats about all I caught. It seemed to be on the level of X-Play, which doesn't really say a whole lot, but it did show that it can be done in a non stupid way.

Didn't catch the show, but they have the list in the newest EGM.

It's what you'd expect from a list thats voted on by MTV viewers. Some games deserve to be their, some don't.

I mean, I don't see how the WWE/Def Jam Vendetta series can be on a top 15 list of games this generation and the Metroid Series gets left out.

Likewise with DDR.

But the list was pretty good in some respects, with The Zelda Series at #1 and Halo #2.

Whoa.. MTV and GTA is NOT number 1?!

May there be hope for people yet?

(Although no Metroid makes this list void to me)

I'm boycotting MTV now, for that exact reason. Yeeeaah.

I read the EGM article about this and was surprised to hear about the MTV / EGM link. Maybe they're finally realizing that video games are even more popular than 50 cent!?!??!

Check out the website for the guy who hosted the show.

www.seanbaby.com (probably not work safe).

It's been a long time since I've visited it as it doesn't really get updated anymore now that Seanbaby has gigs with EGM and other mags. Some of the sections (NES awards with commentary by game characters such as Golgo 13 or the Pro Wrestling announcers, worst games, Nintendo Power reader mail, etc). made me laugh a lot more than anything ever posted on Penny Arcade (who oddly enough sounded miffed that Seanbaby hosted the show a few days ago).

People actually voted for these games and looks like metroid didn't garner enough votes.

Which is sad, and shows why my interest in games wanes.

The type of games I love tend to not be super popular in a lot of cases, thus I don't have as much to chose from.

Well, for what it's worth, I saw the voting form at MTV.com a few days before the deadline and it looked as though EGM/MTV chose the 15 games/series in advance and only let the voters decide what order they should be in. There was no way to write-in and there were only 15 games on the list, so Metroid (or any other game not deemed worthy by EGM/MTV) didn't even have a chance.

The URL to the original poll was saved in my browser's history: http://www.mtv.com/onair/ultimate_countdown/poll.jhtml

If that's the case, it's strange that Metroid wouldn't make the list as it's one of the few (10 or so) games to get a perfect score in EGM and the mags been around for about 15 years.

I guess they didn't really like Prime after all.

I'm guessing it was more MTVs list.

Plus the article in EGM mentioned it was more of a most popular/influential list. And MP didn't sell that well (which is a shame) and was that ground breaking (but neither is a lot of the stuff on the list).

MP got a perfect score and ended up as their game of the year, so I'd hardly say EGM didn't like it.
