Can I use an E-reader with GBA SP??

I got an Ereader (with no manual) and a cable for my gamecube and plugged it into my GBA SP and noticed one plug sticks out of the GBA (its meant for a reg GBA?) Anyway my Cube says it cant communicate with it.

the link cable im using is one that goes into the ereader or gba and fits into the cube controller slot.

what am i doing wrong?

EDIT: Im trying to download content for Animal Crossing

Yes.

Link cable goes into GBA-SP not e-Reader.. the port on the e-Reader was a pass-through port that connected to the link port of the original design GBA.

Yeah that threw me off the first time I used my sp on AC. Plug goes into the GAME BOY not the Reader.

Just don't try to close the screen while the ereader is plugged in.
