Seen: Citizen Kane, Doctor Zhivago

Not interested in(unless you folks somehow change my mind!): Blade II, Boogie Nights, Xmas Story, Color Purple, Harry Potters, The Cardinal, Space Jam, The Right Stuff, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, True Romance, Magnolia, Unforgiven

Considering: Giant, Mission, Once Upon a Time in America, The Gold Rush, Limelight, Modern Times, Seven

Given the ones that you are interested in, I would go with Modern Times or Seven, but it depends on your tastes. Modern Times is truely classic Chaplin and Seven is an extremely well made suspense with some fantastic performances (particularly Kevin Spacey).

I'm curious as to why your not interested in all of those other ones. You've got some good ones listed in there (Boogie Nights, A Christmas Story, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, etc.)

I'd go with either Once Upon a Time in America, Seven, or Modern Times... depending on your mood.

Hope that helps to narrow it down a bit.

I'd also go for MODERN TIMES, among the films you're considering. I wonder why you haven't gone ahead and purchased CITIZEN KANE and DOCTOR ZHIVAGO? Both are superb films, and fantastic DVDs...

Giant is a fun, blowsy 50's popcorn soap/epic, but the disc is horribley flawed, imo, with what is some very egregious and disctracting edge enhacement.
i believe this transfer was sitting around Warner for a few years before they actually released it and the EE is as bed here as i have ever seen it.
people look like they are radioactive, they have so much ringing around them.

if you have a smaller display (under 32") you may not mind it as much, but it ruins the picture on a bigger display.

out of the ones you listed, Seven is not only an interesting , well made film, but also still very much a reference disc as far as a/v goes, as well as having some well informed supplements.
that would probably be my choice.

i like silent films, but was never a big Chaplin fan and have heard there are PAL conversion issues with the Chaplin discs (from what i read, the masters for the discs came from PAL not NTSC sources and therefore suffer from PAL 'ghosting' at times which is a slight blur or slur to parts of the image that are moving do to difference in the frame conversion rate.
however, if you don't see this on your copy o f the Great Dictator, you propbably won't see it on the others.
if you did go with a Chaplin, Modern Times would be my pick- great support from Paulette Goddard in that one.

Grab The Mission. Transfer is awesome and the director has a great commentary.

Once Upon a Time in America is a classic as well. Very underrated.

The Chaplins are must-haves. Same with Once upon a time in america (4 hour movie and with commentary!!)

Of the ones your'e considering, I say get Seven or Modern Times. But I'd get True Romance or Unforgiven before either of those.

Another vote for Modern Times (my personal favorite of Chaplin's feature films.) If you like your The Great Dictator dvd, you'll love this one.

From the one's you're considering I'd get, Giant, Once Upon a Time in America & Seven.

But even before those I'd get Boogie Nights, Christmas Story, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, True Romance, Magnolia & Unforgiven

I honestly can't understand how you could have no interest in those. Cukoo's Nest is a classic, great film. True Romance is without a doubt one of my favoite movies and the SE is incredible! Between the Tarantino script & Tony Scott's filmmaking style you can't miss. And come on... A Christmas Story? How could you not want A Christmas Story?

Did they stop manufacturing Once Upon a Time in America? It's been out of stock at Amazon forever. Used to say shipped in 10-15 days, now it says out of stock and they will notify you within 2-4 weeks if they cannot get it.

One Flew Over the Cukoo's Nest (Nicholson's best film, IMHO), The Mission, and Boogie Nights. All three are excellent and sport good transfers and extras. I'm proud of have these in my collection.
