Chasing amy quality!
Ok I'am watching the chasing amy criteron and noticed its quality is pretty bad. Is this just me going paranoid or is it spose to be like this? I would expect a little more from criterion ya know, so I was suprised. So if you can tell me, i would be very happy since I'am about to rip my hair out because I'am going paranoid.

Chasing Amy is suppose to look like that. If you hear the commentary, you will hear a remark by Scott Mosier how great the print looks by Criterion since you can see the grain. Then Kevin Smith responds that it's Criterion and they do the best work or something like that. Not too sure about it.
The movie was made for so little the quality of the film never looked great. It is a true low budget film.

The film was orginally filmed on 16mm that had to be enlarged to full frame, thus you get a 'consistent' grain appearance to the film. Thats just the way it was filmed - not necessarly a transfer issue.

Does it really matter? I mean are you watching the movie quality, or are you looking at the picture quality? The movie was good, the picture quality's good, it's all good.

It's a $250,000 film shot on Super 16mm. It's not going to look any better than the Criterion DVD, unless Miramax blows millions to make a nice, new high-definition print of the film, which probably won't happen.

actually it could look better, it is a straight port of the criterion laser disc, and I don't have it in front of me but it's not anamorphic i believe. But I'm not complaining, I'm happy with it I'm just saying that it could be better.

The Kevin Smith movies have all been treated pretty well on DVD. Only Clerks isn't anamorphic, and there's supposed to be an SE later in 2004. But all of them have commentaries and deleted scenes at the least, some of them have more.
Maybe it's been awhile since I watched it, but I thought it looked fine.

there is a slight problem with the transfer
I remember reading on viewaskew.com a few years back that there was a problem with the transfer on the DVD. In one scene, in the train station, the image is cropped in the wrong spot (I believe some of the bottom of the frame is cropped off, and there's a lot more headroom at the top of the frame than there should be), and it looks a little strange. And, if you listen to the commentary, the scene is being discussed for how good it looked (because the transfer was fine on the laserdisc, which the commentary was ported from).
I mean, it's not a huge problem or anything, but, since you asked...

For such a low-budget film it's not surprising that some small details may slip through the cracks.
The commentary is indeed ported from the LD (as are the deleted scenes) but it's a good track (and was this the one where Smith and co. said "***** DVD!" or was that from Mallrats? It's been awhile).
