Yes! I will be there at the February 2nd show in Denver.

If god exists then he has to be an Opeth fan.

New DVD from them?
What is this you speak of? And I think I may pick up tickets to the Ohio concert.

They just released a dvd over on their side of the pond called Lamentations, that is going to be released over here in February. It's a full concert I believe as well as some behind the scenes/recording stuff.

Just a quick question to Opeth fans out there. I never really got into Opeth because of the singers "growl" (I absolutely hate that style of vocals) so I was wondering....do they have any albums without the growl and just singing? The music itself sounds awesome (from what I have heard).

Here's another recommendation for 'Damnation'. The whole album is so laid back, that it is hard to believe that Opeth, one of the most progressive metal bands are responsible for it.

I personally love 'Deliverance' (the counter part to 'Damnation') but when I just want peaceful, laid back music, the first cd I go to is 'Damnation'.

I used to be in the same boat. I've been a tool fan for a long time as well, and originally got into Opeth from someones recommendation for a progressive type metal band. I was put off by the lyrics but the music was just too good to pass up. I eventually grew fond of the lyrics though, even if I can't understand what he is saying most of the time.

The band is just incredibly brilliant though. And what's kinda funny is the lyrics are so loud and growl-like, but the content is quite the contrary. A lot of the songs are more in the vein of love or loss, not rage and just being pissed off.

Damnation is an excellent album. It's very mellow, and displays his singing voice. I'd suggest Deliverance and Blackwater park for a better taste of the way they mix the 2 extremes.

Looks like I'll have to take the trip up north to Rochester. I really wish they came down and played somewhere in NYC.

DVD Information from the press release if you guys are interested:

The DVD, presented in High Definition widescreen format, offers audio options in Stereo, 5.1 Surround, and DTS, and the 2-hour set list offers a brilliant mix of OPETH's finest offerings, including a performance of the Damnation album in its entirety!

The track listing includes:

Windowpane
Weakness
In My Time of Need
Harvest
Death Whispered a Lullaby
The Leper Affinity
Closure
Master's Apprentices
Hope Leaves
Deliverance
To Rid The Disease
The Drapery Falls
A Fair Judgment
Ending Credits

Lamentations Live at Shepherd's Bush Empire 2003 also includes a 65-minute documentary on the making of the Deliverance and Damnation albums, where fans can actually witness the actual composition and production of the two releases. Composed of in-depth behind-the-scenes footage, studio outtakes, and interviews with the entire band (guitarist/vocalist Mikael Γ…kerfeldt, guitarist Peter Lindgren, bassist Martin Mendez, drummer Martin Lopez) as well as producer/collaborator Steven Wilson (vocalist/guitarist for the progressive outfit Porcupine Tree), the "making of" feature offers an intuitive glimpse of true masterminds at work.
I'm not a huge Opeth fan so I probably won't be reviewing this one, but I thought I'd give you a heads up on what I know. That track order is also incorrect FYI.

Except that MJKTool isn't looking for mellow.

Anyone going to the Ft. Lauderdale show?

I'm not a fan of growling either, and yet Opeth is one of my favorite bands.

My three favorite songs are growling-free:

1) Credence
2) Benighted
3) Remember Tomorrow

I've heard tons of positive things about this band.

QUESTION: How much of their songs are actual singing and how much are screaming?

thanks

Most of the songs are a combination of both. It's more of a growl than a scream. You can make out the words sometimes, but it's usually just gutteral growling. THen he sings, like really sings. He has a pretty decent voice. Some songs are really quiet, most are really loud with quiet parts and a combo of both singing styles.

The DVD set list is..

1: Window Pane

2: In My Time of Need

3: Death Whispered A Lullaby

4: Closure

5: Hope Leaves

6: To Rid the Disease

7: Ending Credits

/// Intermission

8: Harvest

9: Weakness

10: Master's Apperinces

11: The Drapery Falls

12: Deliverance

13: The Lepper Affinity

14: A Fair Judgement

The DVD also contains a documentry on the making of Damnation / Deliverance is extremely interesting.

Also includes 5.1 and DTS and let me say, the DTS rocks.
