Devil's Backbone Rerelease -- updates?
Just picked up Cronos, and that got me remembering the Del Toro interview on DVD talk a few months ago.
Has anyone seen anything anywhere else about this rerelease? It would seem to be the sort of thing that would be on hold till Hellboy is in the can, but Hellboy starts 4/2/04, and he's talking about an "early next year" release.
JB: On the Devil's Backbone and Blade 2 commentaries, you mention your short films, and according to the Cronos DVD announcement, they were supposed to be included on the new disc. What happened?
GDT: Well, this was a two - pronged problem. (chuckling) We were going to include the short, but it had a soundtrack composed of popular Mexican songs. When we tried to clear the rights, we found that they would cost close to the budget of Cronos! (laughs)The short had, like, you know, eight or nine songs, and each song was over $5,000. So, it was unwise to spend close to $50,000 to clear a short film that, on top of everything, was quite bad. So what we did was include some excerpts of it.
JB: In the featurette.
GDT: In the featurette, in the background, without having to clear the songs. But now, for Hellboy, we have a more substantial budget. And although I cannot clear that short - because it's 30 minutes long and has all those songs - I'm clearing another four short films, and they're going to be included on the DVD rerelease of The Devil's Backbone, which will happen early next year, and the Hellboy DVD.

Hmmm...
It's Columbia. They'll probably have an SE of Devil's Backbone around Hellboy's release with the new stuff - and they will very probably have the same shorts on the Hellboy DVD to puff it out to two discs. I'll wait.

DVD Talk Reviewer Emeritus
That's my interview up there, and I just reviewed the new "Devil's Backbone" disc. Unfortunately, the planned short films didn't materialize, but the disc is really quite good--new transfer and a fantastic new del Toro commentary.

Good news about the transfer and commentary. I've got the The Devil's Backbone Collector's DVD Gift Set (Limited Edition of 100) on order.

At Comic-Con today, after the Hellboy DVD panel, I was getting the old Devil's Backbone signed by del Toro. He started talking about what how different the new transfer was. He said they received a horrible print out of Spain to do the transfer with. They had to spend 2 days trying to repair the print. He spoke of specific scenes in respect to color correctness.
But it was really cool for him to take the time to talk to me about it. You could tell he was really proud of the new transfer.

I have it, of course. I haven't had time to really dig into the extras but the picture really looks great. The audio is a little bit better.. but not much. Nice menus and the disc art is pretty cool.
