Cold Mountain
Has anyone read Cold Mountain. I wanted to read it before the movie came out. I heard it was really good. I just wanted some other opinions before I bought it.
Thanks!

Every couple of years or so there's a book that gets passed around my family because it's so good. Cold Mountain was that book one year. My brother bought it for me 3 years ago, but I still haven't read it. I'm like you, though - I want to read it before I see the movie. With exams slowing down, I think I may start it in a day or two.

Also, how big a role does Natalie Portman's character have in the book (Natalie Portman being the only reason I have an interest in seeing the movie).

I just finished it. I have to say it is one of the best books I have ever read. I want to say that it could be argued to be a Great American Novel alongside The Grapes Of Wrath. I urge everyone to go out and buy this book you will NOT be disappointed.

I went to Rotten Tomatoes and I agree if you look at those the reviews are very mixed. However if you go to metacritic the average score is 92, the same score as Finding Nemo and higher than Pirates of the Caribbean, Mystic River, Big Fish, Seabiscuit and The Two Towers. I think Metacritic shows mainly well-known review sources while Rotten Tomatoes shows reviews from all over the internet. Having since read the book, I am looking forward to the movie.

Seriously? I didn't think she'd ever gone Full Monty.
I just finished reading this, and thought it was a wonderful read. Though the further along I got, the more I realized
Spoiler:
Who is Portman's character? I picked up a used copy with Jude Law, Nicole Kidman and Renee Zellweger on it.
Is the movie worth watching? Regardless of Portman nudity or not.
