A simple Galactica primer? Two simple words - Dont Watch!

I have heard nothing but bad buzz about this project. EVen people who were never fans of the orignial series say that this thing sucks major and hardcore ass.

Oh - and if you like the old show, forget about it. Sci-Fi is dry humping the fans over just about every aspect.

The long and the short - stay as far away from this train wreck as you can. Go get the DVDs and watch the old series instead. Your brain will thank you.

It cannot be any worse than Jar Jar in Star Wars or what has happened to the Trek franchise over the past few years, so I will check it out with an open mind.

What I really want to see, however, are Buck Rogers and Space 1999 revivals.

Basically, nothing. This 'new version' is a remake (or, in their terms, a 'reimagining') that bears little resemblance to the original. Yes, Starbuck is now a woman. But that is trival compared to the dozens of other changes... many of which are in opposition to the entire point of the original program.

Anyone who is interested should be able to watch the miniseries without any previous knowledge of Galactica. They're starting from scratch and it don't look pretty.



About the original series... I've been working my way through the epic series (Cylon head) box set this week. A few observations:

1. I still think that the pilot episode is one of the best things to ever air on TV. I know some people think I'm nuts, but I think this is one of the most entertaining sci-fi popcorn films ever. Right up there with all of the 'classics' in my book.

2. The series that follows is definitely clunky at points (but, in fairness, no more so than most 1970s television). But it is also great fun and I love the early attempts at story arcs. Characters grow and they don't hit the reset button every week. They were clearly trying to do something beyond the robot shoot-em-ups every week. (Although they did not always succeed.)

3. They really should have gone into a 2nd season. Just reading on Galactica sites about some of the plans and "what could have been" is depressing. They were really onto something here, I think.

4. I usually bash Universal's inexplicable DVD policies, but they really deserve kudos for this set. Man, the extras read like a fanboy's dream checklist. Over 30 (!) minutes of deleted/alternate scenes for the pilot, cut scenes for all the other episodes, commentary, documentary, featurettes. They really put together a FANTASTIC package. I can't believe that someone still had all of this footage lying around.
