Week's CDs (11/24-30) -> Thanksgiving Edition
The Unicorns, Who Will Cut Our Hair When We're Gone?
Young People, War Prayers
Arto Lindsay, Mundo Civilizado
Liars, They Threw Us All In a Trench and Stuck a Monument on Top
!!!, Me and Giuliani Down by the Schoolyard (a true story) EP
Les Savy Fav, Rome (written upside down) EP
I'm really loving this Unicorns album...it dives into the direction that I thought Menomena would go: attention-deficient pop that doesn't lose its fun edge while launching into a place you never expected them to go. Probably the closest references I can make would be moments of early Spoon guitartistry (esp. on "The Clap" which sounds like the freaky-cousin-in-the-closet of A Series of Sneaks) + an elastic Moog and a singer that is stuck between the sighs of Bill Doss (Olivia Tremor Control) and Brendan Canning (Broken Social Scene).
QoTD: You're sitting at the Thanksgiving table and decide to talk about music - what're you thankful for? Old & new releases, live shows, eBay deals, webzines, DVD Talkers, critics, whate'er.
Mine =
Vashti Bunyan, Just Another Diamond Day. A late 60s folk record that doesn't really push any boundaries but is equally haunting & sparkling. By extension, I can thank the guys of Animal Collective for talking about this record in an article.
Further extension...I can thank Dusted Magazine for printing some of the most interesting articles I've read this year (Animal Collective article above).
Maybe this is premature since I just saw this show last night, but the knob-twiddler (I think it was either Justin Vandervogen or Nic Offer) of Out Hud for giving me dance moves to steal.
Also, Gemm, Insound, and CD Connection for helping me out w/ those hard-to-find/OOP albums.

Hatebreed: The rise of Brutality
ALL: Live Plus One
Chemical Brothers: Mix CD
QOTD:
I'm thankful for the technology to have a medium (home theater system) in which to really enjoy music and live concerts- be it on CD, DVD in 5.1. etc. I've always had so much enjoyment from listening to music and going to concerts, so being able to bring that experience (somewhat) into my home is something I enjoy and appreciate greatly.

In Time: Best of R.E.M. (w/ rarities, b-sides, etc.)
Marah: Kids in Philly
Beatles: Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
Jayhawks: Hollwood Town Hall
New Pornographers: Electric Version
AOTD:
Not to get too real here, but I'm thankful I have a job that pays me enough to get a reasonable amount of CDs after meeting my family's needs. I'm grateful that my public library gets the occasional new CD (and allows online holds). I'm grateful that I have a job that lets me listen to music (and, er, contribute to this forum, for which I'm also grateful ).

Camper Van Beethoven - Cigarettes and Carrot Juice (The Santa Cruz Years)
Cracker - Forever
Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots 5.1
Flaming Lips - Zaireeka
DJ Z-Trip - Live
Beatles - Let It Be...Naked
I just bought Zaireeka this past weekend. For anyone who's never heard of the disc, it's 4 separate CDs, and elements of each song are on all 4 discs. So, you need 4 CD players to play the album as it's meant to be heard. Wow, talk about one of the coolest things I've ever experienced from music. Absolutely astonishing at points. It's not like listening to a regular CD...it's an event. Sounds come at you from everywhere. I highly recommend it to anyone with the means of playing it properly. Of course, it's fairly difficult to play properly, so it'll never be in heavy rotation. However, it is quite possibly the most unique recording I've ever heard. I was actually (sober and) giggling by the end of the album. When's the last time listening to a CD did that to you?
AOTD: Like Pikul, I'm thankful mostly for my ears. I'm also thankful that I make enough money to support my music addiction with regular CD purchases and live shows. Without music, I'd be even crazier than I already am.

+Lots of Led Zeppelin lately, mostly everything up to Physical Grafitti but a lil bit of Presence as well.
+A lot of Atmosphere
+Everything Tool of course
+Early Smashing Pumpkins tickles my fancy lately
I'm Thankful for having a nice collection of cds to choose from, depending on my mood. I'm also thankful for being raised in a family that didn't shield me from good music and media in an attempt to "protect me."

Arab Strap - "Philophobia"
Hot Snakes - "Suicide Invoice"
TV on the Radio - "Young Liars" EP
Husker Du - "The Living End"
I'm thankful for occasional appearances from Pikul. I'm not thankful for the ear infection, hacking cough, fever, and conjunctivitis that I currently have. When I get sick, I go all out.

I can never listen to music anymore, Pikul, cuz my new job typically requires 14-hour days and there's an office stereo. So I am listening to music all day, I guess, but rarely do I get to listen to what I want. The mag/pub that I'm working for is primarily dance-music oriented, so that's all I listen to anymore. Which I like, but if I have to hear one more Chill Out comp I'm gonna kill someone with their own glowstick. Yesterday I took charge of the stereo though, and played only funk, Afrobeat, disco and hip-hop, and unbelievably, everyone hated it! I don't get these people. Disc three of Star Time was playing and one of the other editors made a face and asked, "What's this?" I couldn't believe it. And they didn't even like Lil Jon!!!

Hey Yancey, (talking about Dance music) have you heard the 4 Hero album: "Creating Patterns"? sure it was a 2001 release, if you haven't check it out, it's ace. Also, let me know what you think are the best 'dance' albums of the year are. My money nowadays is going to more CD's (brit-rock) and less to dance (although I just ordered the latest Layo and Bushwacka! mix CD) have kind of stopped buying Mixmag/Muzik/Jockey Slut because of the high price at Borders, so I feel kind of out of the loop in terms of the 'dance scene.'

Have not heard 4 Hero, Giles. Will check it out. My favorite dance/electronic/whathaveyou releases:
Matthew Dear, Leave Luck to Heaven (ungodly amazing. "Dog Days" best Prince song ever)
Michael Mayer, Peel Sesson and Fabric 13 (two DJ mixes by German house luminary -- these things swing)
Basement Jaxx, Kish Kash (which you already have)
DJ Language Vs. Negroclash (DJ mix by NYC crew. totally fun)
Justin Timberlake, Justified (hell, I could even argue it's a punk record!)
Dizzee Rascal, Boy in da Corner (just as much dance/glitch-punk as it is hip-hop/grime/garage/etc)
Luke Vibert, YosepH (a total rehash of early 90s house, but FUN)
Books on Tape, [i forget the name] (dunno if spy-beat is a genre, but if it is, this is the pinnacle of the sound -- basically the bond theme set to a pots-and-pan factory in a tornado)
There are millions more that Pikul can suggest.
