Flaming Lips Yoshimi DVD-A 5.1 out today
Anyone else heard this?I bet it sounds amazing. I hope it's better than the BareNaked Ladies Everything for Everyone DVD_Audio which didn't even sound like a DVD-Audio because it had virtually no surround mix.

I am listening to it now and I have to say this is my new DVD-Audio reference disc. This is what this media is supposed to be all about. A mix that sweeps across the channels and offers a new perspective on a dense, multi instrumental dynamic CD. I already have the original CD (included). Why not go wild and use the 5.1 mix for all it's worth? Awesome.

you know for a brand new Best Buy, they supremely suck at new releases, no Flaming Lips disc. guess I will wait til the end of the week to see if they get it in.

Giles - Did you check the CD section? The DVD-A comes in a standard double jewel case with a new pressing of the Yoshimi CD... My BB had 5 copies or so...
To follow up the previous posters... Yup, this is a VERY aggressive mix and is also my new DVD-A reference disc. Sounds absolutely amazing... Cool extras too. I didn't bother checking out the 2.0 mix but the 5.1 high resolution mix is flat out

now about this "aggressive" 5.1 soundmix. I was listening to Super Furry Animals "Phantom Planet" in DTS earlier tonight, and that mix could be best described as aggressive as well, to the point where I would describe it as somewhat sloppy. As compared to SFA's "Rings Around the World" I would assume and state that "Rings" soundmix is also aggressive but creates a much wider and sonically better composed soundfield. I am eagerly awaiting to hear how "Yoshi's" soundmix compares to these SFA releases since aggressive can mean both positive and negative playback compositions.

I would describe this as the first DVD-A I've heard where the medium is used to recreate an album. I think it fits this band well because they're so quirky and they take so many chances musically. There are songs where the rhythm track circles around you and then changes direction (Do you realize). On the title track, the guitar chords cycle around the speakers. It just sounds amazing. I can't think of too many bands that could do this without it ruining the integrity of the music (imagine a Dylan or Beatles album, people would cry heresy) but with the Lips it just seems to fit so well because of their experimental and fun nature.

It will work on a regular DVD player though not at the same bit rate. Actually I tried the regular DVD V and it sounds pretty close to the DVD-Audio. There's even these pulsating color visuals on the screen that make you zone out while your listening to the music. Makes me wish I had access to those herbs I used to inhale before I got married and had kids.

Giles - I just picked this up at Best Buy at lunch...can't wait to get home and listen to it. Did you ask the folks at BB if they had any? I looked all over the store for a copy with no luck, so I finally asked someone if they had it in stock. They had 10 of 'em in the back. No one had cared enough to stock it up front (not the first time this has happened to me at BB).

As for my take and aggressive mix comment... All speakers are used during most of the mix (my definition of aggressive), creating a very wide soundfield. The mix bounces from place to place but it sounds full and balanced with a definite purpose, not just a gimmicky surround field and a lot of random panning. The engineering is really top notch and showcases exactly what a 5.1 high resolution audio mix should do and is capable of. Really, really sweet.

I agree with Johnny Zhivago, the surround mix is absolutely phenomenal. Even cooler than the Dark Side of the Moon SACD. It's probably the most aggressive surround music I've ever heard. It's should sound gimmicky, but it doesn't. Instead, it shows how effective a 5.1 music mix can be...

all this talk and no one has yet to mention the drop out in the 5.1 mix of "Approaching Pavonis Mons By Balloon"
pretty sad that there is this and the issue with disc 2 of Springsteen's Barcelona dvd both released on the same day
glad the studios are paying close attention to QC

I just noticed it last night. I was pretty shocked that they'd devote this much energy to a project and ruin the final fade out. Especially for a Grammy winning composition. I'll be checking for a trade in offer.. By the way, am I the only one who's sat and closed their eyes while listeing to this thing and felt like they were having an acid flashback? (not that I'd know what that feels like)
