Dolby Digital / DTS Bit Rate Info

Does anyone know of a good source to get the Dolby Digital and DTS bit rate info for DVDs other than WidescreenReview.com?

Their site is great, but I don't want to pay for it for all the information. Thanks.

754kb/s for DTS and 448kb/s for Dolby Digital if I remember correctly.

...well... yes... for half-bit DTS, anyway... whereas DD bit-rates can vary quite a bit... I think...

. . . . . .

Unless you are asking about specific discs, this is how audio is usually done on DVD...

DTS comes in two flavors, 754 kb/s and 1509 kb/s. Very few discs use 1509, and those few were some of the first DTS DVDs released. 754 is the going rate these days.

Dolby Digital does use more bit rates, but usually for different channel configurations. For 5.1, the most common bit rate is 448 kb/s with some tracks being encoded at 384 kb/s (the rate used on laserdisc, btw). Warner was the last of the major labels using 384, but their last several major releases are encoded at 448.

Two channel Dolby Digital tracks are usually 192 kb/s. Most studios use DD 2.0 for their mono tracks as well as stereo (surround). The exception is Warner which encodes mono tracks as 1.0 but still uses 192 kb/s.

Additionally, a few discs have been released with commentary tracks encoded at 1.0 96 kb/s (Apollo 13 is one).

If you want to know the bit rate for specific discs, you could ask in the forum. A number of processors and PC DVD software players can show audio bit rate.

Yes, I am well aware of all the technical data on the bit rate possibilities. I meant that I want the data on specific titles. I keep a very comprehensive database on my DVD collection and one of the fields is the audio bit rate. On the titles that Widescreen Review doesn't review, this field is unfortunately left blank.

If on one knows of another site with this data, what computer programs have this info. I don't remember seeing it in Power DVD or Win DVD.

F.Y.I. Robert:

No company has dropped 384 bit rate Dolby Digital as an official policy and although they are getting rare, they are still being produced.

As an example, last weeks "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle" from Columbia Tri-Star is encoded in 384.

PowerDVD does have this feature, or at least the version I'm using does. In PowerDVD XP, with the disc playing, right click on the screen and select "show information". That will show the attributes of the currently selected audio track. You can switch tracks on the fly to get info on all tracks.

RE: Charlie's Angels Full Throttle...

Amazing that a company that does so many things so well would backslide to something so dumb. In light of Sony/Columbia's past mastering practices, I'd have to agree with Adrenaline. This smacks of the worst sort of crap from a marketing hack.

Well, I just checked my copy of Power DVD (which is version 3.0) and it doesn't appear to have this feature. I know that all Sony players display the audio bit rate, but I run Denon equipment and I'm not going to buy a Sony DVD for this purpose. Any other suggestions?

Can you download an upgraded version of Power DVD? I'm running v5.0 and it has the feature like Robert George mentioned.

Wow. And I thought I had an anal database.

My version of WinDVD 4 does what I think you're looking for. Open any subpanel and click on the wrench (Setup) icon, then click on the Information tab.

It'll also give you the video bitrate, which I assume you also have a database entry for?

Well, I'll try to get a hold of one of these programs then. If anyone knows of a website like Widescreen Review, let me know.
